Bleach may be needed to remove some stains but for disinfecting I'd stick with white vinegar or H2O2.

Thank y'all for the advice. I'll try taking out the rest of the stains after this inspection tomorrow. 'Have to get back to cleaning...

I suspect the the oxy type cleaners - those the ones usually (maybe always) containing sodium percarbonate as the active ingredient - would work just as well but obviously more expensive. |

There are a few things that may resist bleach but they are all very unlikely to be found in households, let alone on cups and mugs, or cutting boards, etc. The only things I am aware of that are resistant are for surface cleaning situations some molds and their spores are resistant if they are well established on a non porous surface, and for water borne situations some protozoa found in unfiltered polluted water such as giardia. Giardia or any of the other protozoa will not be found in developed country kitchen situations (giardia, being the likely most common, is also not found in tropical polluted water, as it is a temperate climate inhabitant) and molds are unlikely to exist in the extensive amounts for airborne spores to be a danger. Against these things vinegar is also not reliable as it will not kill all molds and its performance against bleach resistant water borne protozoa I could not comment on, but would be an inconvenient sterilizer unlikely to be useful (filtration is the usual method). The active stain removing ingredient in Bar Keepers Friend is just cheap old oxalic acid. One can buy a lifetime's supply of oxalic acid crystals on the internet for the price of one container of Bar Keepers Friend (which is an expensive cleaning product).
If scouring wanted as well, then there are dozens of cheap products in the supermarket to do that bit. Again, oxalic acid is widely used in the yachting industry for removing stains on all sorts of things, including on stainless steel, waterline stains on fiberglass/paint, rust stains on sails, etc. as it is otherwise non-aggressive. If one needs it to stick while it works make a paste of it with wallpaper paste, for example. I wouldn't rely on it for sterilization, it is mild (although poisonous to humans if enough taken), and am unaware of it being used so. Wow, I'm going into the cleaning products business, I didn't realize there were so many people willing to throw their money away on cleaning names (there again I have seen the TV advertisements aimed at them ![]() Last edited by AnotherCat; 02-27-2020 at 08:33 PM. |

I'm thankful for all the advice. At least I know there are options. Knowledge is much better than ignorance in all areas of life.

Normally one would just spray the oxalic solution lightly on and leave it for a while and wipe off. For difficult surfaces such as undersides of ss benches etc. or vertical or overhanging surfaces where staining is bad and longer term contact is desired one would thicken it. That is just an expansion of what I posted before. But for you, I'll just leave it at that else "discussion" will go on forever. |

Yes, let's drop it please. Since this was originally about getting stains out of a mug/cup.
