It seems the expresso-flavored coffee I was drinking stained my favorite cup. If it's doing that to the cup, what is it doing to me?

Tea stains my stoneware mug, too. Hand washing doesn't get rid of it, but the dishwasher does. Most dishwasher detergents have bleach -- I suspect that's what's doing it.

I was buying ground, organic Espresso at a local market, brewing it in my coffee maker and hoping I was drinking the real thing. After a few weeks of this I realized that was not the case. I was drinking a beverage with a lot of caffeine, but it was not Espresso because I was not using an Espresso maker. So I called it Espresso-flavored coffee.
It tasted good and it did the trick--gave me the caffeine I needed, so I drank it for a few months. It stained my favorite cup so badly it took every ounce of strength to get it clean--as stain-free as possible. |

You could try denture cleaning tablets. I use those when tea has stained a cup and even the dishwasher can't get it off. Just put hot water in the mug, drop in a tablet and let it sit for a while. After that the tea stain comes right off.

I learned a trick (hack) back in my former life in the Navy as a mess cook. Make a paste out of old fashioned scouring powder and water, and just rub a little of it in the cup with your fingers. It gets coffee/tea stained cup squeaky white.

There's an easy way to remove that stain -- good old fashioned household (chlorine) bleach (javex). Something on the order 1-2% (5-10 ml in a typical 16 oz mug) in the mug along with a drop or two of dishwashing liquid, and let stand for a half hour or so.
(It's actually a good idea to keep a container of 10% bleach in the kitchen anyway, as a disinfectant. (For example, when working with raw meat (especially poultry!), one should always bleach the cutting board or counter surface that the meat has been in contact with.) Much easier on the downstream environment than other, more expensive, disinfectants. ) |
