Telling Kovid to ask for beta testers when he did, and saying Calibre is not Open Source when it is - 0 for 2, well done.

No worries, this pretty much comes with the territory of writing software. Over the years I have mostly learned to ignore feedback from people that use hyperbole, in my experience, such feedback is rarely valuable. People that instead make thoughtful and reasoned and researched criticism, get listened to.

So you have never been mistaken about anything in your life. Sorry, but I cannot match your level of total perfection.

@bmcs

Please tone it down. You are not being all that nice.

You say there are problems with the new Calibre Viewer and all we are asking is for you to pots what's wrong in case there really is a problem so it can be fixed.

Hm! It seems that for a long time I have had the wrong impression about the development of the Calibre program. In the past it always appeared to me that this was something of a one man project, with few others contributing things like translations. Even the GUI partially gives that impression saying "created by Kovid Goyal".

Even though I am involved with a number of other open source projects and I dislike coding in Python, I have downloaded the source from github and I will take a look to see if there is anything I can usefully contribute.
Maybe I should create an alternative e-book viewer plug-in

Don't understand your "Please tone it down." comment. What is that you want "toned down"? If you don't like what I write, please ignore me.

I did NOT say there were problems with the new Calibre Viewer, the essence of what I said was that I did not like the changes that had been made to viewer. The change had already been made and it seems that most others like the new format. So it would be a waste of time for me to detail all my dislikes as that would only produce a negative commentary such as we have here.

Nope, you don't get to force users:

It's easy enough to revert back to the previous version of Calibre - a program that still stands head an shoulders above anything remotely like it. Kudos to Kovid and Co. for an excellent program and one I will donate to (having sheepishly realised that I haven't already done so, although having used the program for a number of years).

Well, staying with an older version has the drawback of not getting support for new devices, should you decide to get one.

People that have issues with the new viewer probably don't have a device (to worry about New support). The Viewer IS their primary device.

... my wife and I both have Samsung tablets that we use for reading, using FBReader. I usually just copy files to these devices in an ad-hoc, probably kludgy manner.

I preview and organise our reading matter on my desktop PC, using calibre, and I'm an old dog who learns new tricks only when forced to.

Regards,

M.

Yes, Foliate is a good choice. Nice interface, lean, annotation support, themes, dictionary...

I have just made good on my threat to donate. Thanks again for an excellent program, Kovid.
