One of my favorite noir mysteries is Night Train by Martin Amis. It was written in 1997 so you might be able to get it from your library assuming they lend eBooks

I was never really able to get into Earl Stanley Gardner's Perry Mason series. However, that was quite a while ago (perhaps over 30 years ago), and I should probably give him another try. |

Yes, I forgot to mention him. His 'Richard Stark' were very entertaining when I read them. (I'll need to check to see what I've read, but this was way before calibre and ebooks.) |

Thanks, but I'm staying away from hard-boiled zombies...not quite to may taste at this time. |

"Career Move" (one of his short stories) should be read by every aspiring writer. HILARIOUSLY FUNNY. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. |

So far, in this young thread, I'm leaning toward something by James Hadley Chase.

If you don't mind hazy memories, I remember enjoying Sean Rowe's Fever, about a cruise ship heist and the fallout. But it's been a decade, so I don't remember much now. The author died afterwards, so it's his only book, I believe.

A modern hardboiled author on my TBR list is Victor Gischler. He seems to have moved on to comic books and paranormal stories, but he started with books with fun titles like Gun Monkeys, The Pistol Poets, Shotgun Opera and Suicide Squeeze.

Megan Abbott's early books: Die a Little, The Song Is You, Bury Me Deep, and Queenpin. These are noir from a feminine point of view; Bury Me Deep, based on a true case, is probably my favorite of the four.

Have you ever read any of the Martin Walker mysteries? Very pleasant cozy mysteries that take place in south western France.

This is one I came across recently and have sampled (I've been hoping it would go on sale, but it hasn't yet). It has that noir feel to it and the sample was very good--dark, but not too dark, contemporary. World weary. Tough guy.
