I've been told explicitly to remove ereaders at airports in Brussels, Frankfurt, Shanghai, Moscow, Delhi. There was no written notice, they just sent back my handbag and asked me to remove them and get bag screened again.
And yes, I also think it depends on the security officers, but it is done so I would also be interested to know how to protect my readers apart from them all having covers.

Don't put your Reader directly on the belt. If you have to take it out of your bag, put it in a tray and don't put anything heavy in the same tray with your Reader.

I think that at every airport I have been, you have to put all the things in trays, one for electronic devices and other for liquids, bags and so. I never put any device on the belt.

My sister flys frequently, and her ereader has seen more X-rays then the avg person will ever see in a lifetime. And her kobo is fine. I stand by my original assessment it's a broken screen. The fact that it was xrayed is coincidence.. either way it's broken.

Nobody is talking about Xray damage. They're talking about the potential for static electricity damage from the conveyor belt.

Frankfurt they make you separate ereaders for instance.
I had no idea that could happen scary.

Broken substrate also generally prevents a part of the screen from changing at all. The damage here seems to allow the image to change but the black/white are reversed in certain spots.

Well yes my kobo also goes though the machine every week or two and I never had a problem

I frequently travel through UK airports. A few years ago Heathrow did change the rules such that you had to remove ereaders. As I recall the signs they put up in T5 actually said Kindle rather than something more generic. I stopped traveling with both an ereader and tablet after that because it was too awkward to get everything out plus a laptop and remove coats etc. I can't remember if the rule was still in effect last time I went through Heathrow. One time when I went through Manchester the guy next to me had his iPad stolen because your stuff goes through the belt faster than you can through the scanners, and it was an easy target not being inside a bag.

The Wall Street Journal reported in the last few weeks that the US has been testing removing all kinds of things from bags such as food and electronics bigger than a cellphone. I recently had to take my tablet out separately. It was frustrating because it's not the current rule so it confused everyone and the line was already long. Turns out I was in one of the cities identified in the WSJ article as running tests!

I was at Heathrow earlier this month. I didn't take out my Reader. I did take out my Surface Pro 2. I've never been asked to take anything out but a tablet or laptop. I'll be flying in the US in June, so I'll see what happens.

Yes, according to the New York Times, May 24, 2017

"The test locations include airports of varying sizes, the agency said. Among them are midsize airports in Colorado Springs and Boise, Idaho, as well as Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport in Texas.

Larger airports include Detroit Metropolitan; Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International in Florida; Logan International in Boston; Los Angeles International; Luis Muñoz Marín International in San Juan, P.R.; and McCarran International in Las Vegas.

Given that Logan is one of these test airports, I may just leave my Reader in my bag and see what happens.

If static is the problem then putting the reader in the sort of anti-static bag used for computer components would be good insurance.

One I have for a Hard Disk Drive is about the right size for an ereader. The bag's transparent and so it shouldn't need the reader to be removed.

I don't really think this is done to inconvenience travelers. I know that in the US there is a laboratory that experiments with devices to see what could be made into a dangerous device. For example, the one quart bag for your liquids is considered a safe size. A smaller iPhone must have been determined to be safe, but a larger phone to be a risk.

In the US, frequent travelers can pay a fee ($85 for 5 years) to be reviewed and considered as low risk, and have "TSA Pre-Check" added to their boarding pass; when you have this, the requirement to remove lap-tops, shoes, belts, light coats etc. is waived and you go through a special line that is usually shorter. It saves a bit of time. Sometimes the pre-check designation is added to my boarding pass even though I have not paid for it, most likely due to my travel patterns, age etc.

Given the recent history with terror attacks & threats, I will continue to take out what they ask me to take out, be prepared when I get to the airport for changes to the process and cooperate with the security personnel. I don't want to be the distraction that makes it easier for the bad guys to identify a hole in the system.
