Actually, I did answer "multiple firmware versions". However, to be specific, FW 5.7.4 on both PW2 and PW3, but earlier firmware versions worked the same on both these devices and others (5.6.1.1, and whatever my original PW1 had on it).

And there are MANY comments by MANY folks in these forums about the paperwhite backlights not going completely off at minimum light setting (except when in screensaver mode). Even the PW1 had a hack for that...

Now there is a difference -

The PW-3 I tested with is running 5.6.1.1
(only NiLuJe's PW-3 has the current firmware installed on it - and it isn't running - I took it apart and set the battery aside).

And that study linking cellphones to brain cancer, which as become the foundation of a ton of fear-mongering news stories (and legislation) over past decades (including so-called "wifi and EMI allergies"), it has been proven as fact that the research data used in that study was faked (just like the fake "research" linking immunizations and autism). That does not mean such links do not exist -- just that the "proof" was faked, and many more REAL research studies failed to find such missing links.

Sunlight hitting your body contains WAY MORE ENERGY at any frequency of study than wifi or cellphones. Point any directional receiver antenna at the sun (no matter what frequency it uses) and it will be swamped with noise. Solar electromagnetic radiation can even BURN YOUR SKIN (i.e. sunburn). Anybody who suffers EMI (or wifi) allergies should avoid sunlight at all costs... But beware of toasters and stoves and electric heaters too, for they also emit electromagnetic radiation (and so does a campfire for that matter).
Question: Is this just electric stoves or gas stoves too?
Interesting discussion on radiation. Thanks for the information.

Just because of the faulty research protocols GM mentions -
It is still not advisable to stick your head in your microwave oven with the safety interlocks by-passed and press "Potato".

(Or your foot - and press "Pop Corn".)

Thanks for the warning. I thought about doing just that this afternoon.

I guess I should use someone else's head for that experiment.

My problem is knives. They seem to have some kind of property to them that attracts my blood. Or that one could be my blood is attracted to knives. And always just teeny tiny slices.
Is there a scientific explanation or is it I am a klutz that needs to pay closer attention to where the blade is?

Science recommends that you keep the sharp pointy end on the outside of your body. Going against that advice is only recommended if you have sufficient medical training, and even then, you should avoid performing medical operations on your own body (especially unnecessary operations required to put a doctor's offspring through college) if at all possible.

Actually, specialized microwave ovens are used for 2.45GHz medical diathermy (i.e. "internal heating"). But for corn removal on a foot, I am not sure if they have a "popcorn" setting. I think liquid nitrogen is the prefered corn removal method.

And as far as microwave heating of the head, the primary immediate danger is to the eyes, where the eye lenses can get cataracts from heating them (much like cooking egg-whites).

In fact, the operating principles of microwave ovens were discovered when military personnel used to stand in front of an operating microwave radar dish antenna to warm up, and one of them noticed that the chocolate bar in his pocket melted. Those radar transmitters were a heck of a lot more powerful than wimpy wifi signals...

However, if you really do have a "burning" desire to microwave your head, they make diathermy shields specifically for that purpose.

My medical training is limited to a very minor first aid course in high school. Dating an EMT while in high school. And I took A&P, and microbiology in college.

I found another way to control brightness, which also allows completely off:
PHP Code:
lipc-set-prop com.lab126.powerd flIntensity 0
turns the frontlight off.
PHP Code:
lipc-set-prop com.lab126.powerd flIntensity 25
sets it to max brightness.

Notice that the first method has a range of 0-999, whilst the second uses 0-25.

Also, we discussed this in the past for the original PW1, but the /sys location was different:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho....php?p=2315100

Perhaps the lipc method may be more consistent across kindle models?

One noticeable difference: the "lipc" method mantains light off also after screensaver, the "echo" method does not

Which is reasonable.
The "echo" method is changing the value of an internal kernel variable.
What some might call a 'poke' function.

The 'lipc' method is most likely also updating 'state' information within the software system (in addition to poking the kernel).

My K1 doesn't have a lipc command. But then it doesn't have a frontlight either...
