While it's technically not covered by warranty Amazon is generally pretty generous in covering something like this, especially the first time it happens.

I'm skeptical about the issue being covered under the amazon warranty. If the broken substrate is your fault (rough handling) then I'm afraid you have to get a new one at full price (however, they offered a friend of mine a minor discount).

So you must get your story right and genuinely pointing towards an inevitable damage.

That is exactly why I buy the extended warranty. It happen to me years ago with a kindle keyboard that fell off my sofa onto carpet. I know a lot of people think it's a con but for Kindles I think it's a worthwhile if you consider the cost as a guarantee at least that for the three years you'll have a working kindle.

Fact of the matter is it doesn't work. All I can do at this point is send it in and see what Amazon says. I also didn't mistreat it or treat it any differently than in a regular day or than with any other device that I've owned. If it's a broken substrate (and I agree it does look like it) then I am very disappointed in the durability of the KV.

Question (and I'm afraid of the answer to be honest!): if it's a broken substrate then the device should still work right? After poking around the interwebs, a broken substrate should only cause the afflicted areas to not work. This device wouldn't come off it's sleep screen. I couldn't shut it off or restart it. Plugging it in didn't do anything and it just would blink on and off. Any one have that happen?

It's also possible that what damaged it also damaged the internals. There is no doubt that that is a broken substrate, however. It's very clear.

Nobody's suggesting that you deliberately or knowingly damaged it, but nonetheless, it is damaged, and something must have caused it. The most likely explanation is perhaps that someone or something knocked your bag with the Kindle in it without you noticing it. These things do happen, regrettably.

I've accepted that. I didn't think anyone was being rude. It's just my first broken device and it just happens to be the most expensive! I have a back up Paperwhite that I hadn't sold yet so I doubt that I get a replacement if I have to pay for it. And I understand that I probably will.

Please know that I'm not trying to be rude either. I think it's the shock.

I completely understand, and I hope Amazon accept your warranty claim. Just wanted to make you aware that there is a good chance that they won't, unfortunately.

If they don't accept it, you can always use (perhaps) some of the internals or else use our Flea Market Forum to sell your damaged reader for parts.

If we take bets, I'd wager Amazon will replace it for free.
No guarantees, but they tend like to keep customers happily buying ebooks through their Kindles, and that requires the customer to, 1, be happy, and 2, have a working Kindle.
The likelihood sometimes varies with the particular CS rep you speak to, as well.

I'm interested in hearing what happens.

Agreeing with this completely.
I am assuming speaking of Amazon, you still have all your fingers.

Ha, yes, fingers are fine. I'll report back after actually using the chopper. If I can still type, that is.

Not really. Sometimes a small portion of the screen will still update, but it's not that rare that nothing on the screen changes. As others have said it's also possible that something internal got broken too.

Kindle Voyage - I Am Devestated!

My first kindle broke this way. Amazon replaced it for free, but it was a while ago so they may have changed their policy on it by now. It wouldn't turn on or change screens or anything.

I'll definitely keep everyone updated. Thanks for all your input. It's keeping me bolstered. It should have been picked up at my office today. If not then tomorrow.
