Robert Charles Wilson's _A Bridge of Years_. A very beautiful book that explores nostalgia, the wish to return to a simpler time, and combines it with a good story-line.

That makes me think of the Twilight Zone episode "Walking Distance."

Has anyone mentioned "Bid Time Return" (aka "Somewhere in Time") by Richard Matheson?

Funny, I loved the movie (and watch it again when I come upon it) but never read the book. lol I'll put it on my list!

My expectation from time travel books is very simple -- simply entertainment. It's not rocket science (or maybe it is! )

If you do want time travel (albeit a one-way trip into the future) combined with rocket science, there's Poul Anderson's classic "Tau Zero".

Replay by Ken Grimwood. Jeff dies at 43 and wakes up 25 years in his past in his 18 year old body. He is destined to relive his life over until he hits 43 and again wakes up in his own past.
I enjoyed this one over the years. It seems that it is not available as an eBook except in German on Amazon UK.

On of my very favourites. I reread this every few years or so.

Asimov, very short story, purely for fun (and pun):
Spoiler:
"A Niche in Time Saves Stein."

Spoiler!!! That's not the title, you just blew the punchline.

The story is called "A Loint of Paw."

Just finished Signal by Patrick Lee. It's a fast paced thriller that explores some of the consequences of altering the future. I notice the book description avoids revealing the time travel aspect (it could spoil the beginning) so I'll put my explanation in a spoiler.
Spoiler:
The time travel element involves a receiver that picks up random transmissions from future FM broadcasts. The novel focuses on the pros and cons of this ability.

Just wanted to mention a book I recently finished reading: Version Control by Dexter Palmer. It's a story about a physicist who spends years working--seemingly unsuccessfully--on a Causality Violation Device ("don't call it a time machine!").

It's not a time-travelling adventure or thriller or anything, but it's got great characters, a great premise, and plenty of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey, paradoxical food for thought before all is said and done.

I believe that was just mentioned in the one of the Deals and Freebies threads recently, but I can't find it now.

That's possible. It's a fairly new release, so a promo of that sort makes sense.

Doesn't seem to be available as an ebook in the UK; only as an eye-wateringly expensive hardback.

Well that's unfortunate. Hopefully it will be available as an ebook soon in the UK. But I know there's several UK releases that I've been waiting for years to become available as US ebooks, too.

It all just seems so silly in this day an age. "I don't want to buy your paper. I want to buy your electrons. You have electrons for sale. Sell me your electrons."
