When should I receive the VIP code? I joined on the 26th but so far no code.
I only joined because I thought the 10% might be worthwhile but it really isn't. It only applies to non-agency publishers and does not even include self-pubs (this was really disappointing). And it really doesn't add up to an additional 10% when using a coupon code. The larger the code you use the less additional savings the 10% yields. For example on a $10 book 10% + no code = $9 10% + 10% code = $8.10 (19% for an additional 9% / $0.90) 10% + 50% code = $4.50 (55% for an additional 5% / $0.50) 10% + 75% code = $2.25 (77.5% for an additional 2.5% / $0.25) At these rates it will take a long while to earn back the $10 I invested since I only shop when big codes are available. BTW - I couldn't get any coupon codes to work on the membership. Last edited by apesmom; 10-27-2015 at 11:18 PM. |

I don't buy many self-published books, and most publishers are discountable and eligible for the VIP discount in New Zealand, but if it had been possible to join the VIP scheme at the beginning of this year I estimate I would have already saved over $25 just from the 10% VIP discount and 2x super points, even without counting the free book, promotions, or bonus days which are a bit hard to quantify in advance. Edit: BTW to calculate the value of the super points I allow for the effect of the promo code that I could have used if I hadn't bought the book by redeeming points. I.e. If I could get a $5 book for 2800 super points then that would value the points at about $1.79 per 1000, but I if I assume I could have used a 50% code on the book then the points are really only worth half that or about $0.89 per 1000. So I figure the extra 2x super points earned by VIP members is equivalent to about an extra 1% discount on all books (including non-discountable ones) assuming an average discount of about 45% on the books that can be redeemed with points. (I am assuming promo codes can't be used when redeeming super points, but I don't know that for sure.) Last edited by GeoffR; 10-28-2015 at 12:34 AM. Reason: to calculate the value of the super points ... |

VIP membership doesn't seem to be couponable in the UK. I didn't spend £60+ at Kobo over the last year, and I doubt I'll spend that much at Kobo over the next year, so it's not worth it to me.
Although I am considering switching my Asimov/Analog subs over to Kobo. Does anyone know if the VIP 10% discount works on those subscriptions? That might make it worth it. |

When I joined it was discountable. I paid 6.50 for the year and got a free book (that was actually on my wish list) that would have been more than 6.50 even with the best coupon I had at the time.
I was lucky in that the list of free books had a lot of cozy mysteries. There's supposed to be a free book every year, although the list might not always be as good for me as this year's. I changed the setting on my account to not automatically renew anyway. |

A publisher I follow on Goodreads posted this info from a Kobo email they received, so it looks like a UK 50% off sale is on the way:
"Our books on Kobo are 50% for the next few days. The sale runs in different dates by territory, and each territory has it’s own promo code. See below for the full details. You can use the code an unlimited number of times. *The sale is through Kobo, we don't have anything to do with it. Canada October 28th – October 31st Promo Code: CA50SALE United States/Australia/New Zealand October 27th – October 30th Promo Code: GET50SALE United Kingdom October 30th – November 2nd Promo Code: UK50SALE" |
