The Head of Zeus UK editions of Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series (books 1-13) are on special in New Zealand and Australia for about $2.99 each (Amazon at $NZ 2.86 and Kobo/VIP at $NZ 2.69 seem to be cheapest in New Zealand, with further promo code discounts available at Kobo.) It might be on sale in other countries where the UK edition is available too.

I hear a lot about how bad this series is, I haven't read it, but I am sort of tempted just to find out.

Be careful with that, I ignored the warnings about how hideously awful Gentry Lee's continuation of Arthur C. Clarke's Rendezvous With Rama was, and I still regret reading it. It was so bad I ended up skimming the last half of the final book because I just couldn't take any more of the horrible bleakness. It's kind of amazing in a train-wreck sort of way. It systematically takes every joyful and positive aspect of the future Clarke presented in Rendezvous With Rama and destroys them all. Hell, in Lee's twisted continuation, Rome even got nuked. (Literally.)

And damn, what the characters are put through. It just never stopped getting worse. I was left with the impression Lee is the most pessimistic person on the planet, finding absolutely no good in humanity.

So yeah, if pretty much everyone says it sucks, don't read it unless you're a masochist.

I believe the first few are OK.

I mean, I've read the first one, and I didn't like it, but it was just ordinary dislike not anything special.

I've read most of the Sword of Truth series and I found it to be good. The nay-sayers are wrong (IMHO).

I'd suggest that the previous poster reads the first couple of books in the series and makes up his or her own mind, rather than relying on other peoples' opinions of it.

The series had its ups and downs. If you do read the books, and value your sanity, then avoid the television series loosely inspired by the books.

I actually thought the TV series was better than the books. I gave up reading during the 4th book. The books were good in places and had promise, it just felt the story got ridiculous by the 4th book. But everyone has different tastes.

The yay-sayers are wrong, imho. :P

I was really into the series in my late teens/early twenties, but at some point I just got tired of it. That said, my preferences are either complete fluffy nonsense or heavy character development - these are neither.
This falls into the fantasy cliches of super good vs super evil.

That said, for $3/each, it would be worth a look if you are curious. If you read the first one (or two) and don't like them, amazon allows returns - so it's just a matter of how quick a reader you are and if you're willing to read a couple immediately to see if it's worth keeping the whole series for a good price!

Metro 2033 is free today at Amazon (possibly elsewhere).

This book is a post-apocalyptic tale set in the Moscow subway system, now the world's largest bomb shelter, and is the basis for the Metro2033 and Metro: Last Light video games.

Brief description:
Spoiler:
Set in the shattered subway of a post apocalyptic Moscow, Metro 2033 is a story of intensive underground survival where the fate of mankind rests in your hands.

In 2013 the world was devastated by an apocalyptic event, annihilating almost all mankind and turning the earth’s surface into a poisonous wasteland. A handful of survivors took refuge in the depths of the Moscow underground, and human civilization entered a new Dark Age.

The year is 2033. An entire generation has been born and raised underground, and their besieged Metro Station-Cities struggle for survival, with each other, and the mutant horrors that await outside.

Artyom was born in the last days before the fire. Having never ventured beyond his Metro Station-City limits, one fateful event sparks a desperate mission to the heart of the Metro system, to warn the remnants of mankind of a terrible impending threat. His journey takes him from the forgotten catacombs beneath the subway to the desolate wastelands above, where his actions will determine the fate of mankind.

Always a sucker for Space Opera (and gearing up for Star Wars), I was happy to see a full series space opera thriller on sale at Amazon US:

Also same price at kobo and couponable, if one is so inclined. (Possibly same price elsewhere, but I didn't look.)

(prices only confirmed in US. YMMV)
