Wonderful memories! 1952 "Look! Up in the sky! Is it a bird? Is it a plane?" I have the DVD with the entire series. I love seeing George Reeves when he shows up in other movie roles. 'Look! Superman is in Gone With The Wind!'

Pooh, I've been trying to figure out what kind of spider Beatrice is, and have decided that she's a huge one. Beatrice is a really enormous spider. Do you live near a nuclear power plant? Have the insects on which Beatrice feeds been eating genetically modified foods? Has she ever been injected with growth hormones or steroids?

I also have the DVD of the entire series. It's the only series I do have complete on DVD. So why am I excited to see it again with commercials? Go figure.

Poor George Reeves. He became so closely identified with Superman the public wouldn't buy him in any other roles.

Yes - she's a big 'un! That's why I was so concerned for the hummingbirds. I think her current size is due to the imminent production of an egg sac. In the meantime I am observing from a distance. Her orb web is enormous - I'm trying to get a photo when it catches the sun light - I estimate that it is 3-4 feet in diameter.

Rather like the William Tell Overture. Any male born before 1955 will hear it and ONLY think one thing!

Is it my imagination or is that a violin on the fellow's back? I've enhanced the photo to make it easier to see the pattern.

I just went and looked at a bunch of brown recluse pictures, and I'm 99% sure that's what you've got. The fiddle on the segment of the body containing the legs, with the neck of the fiddle pointing to the other section - that's what yours has, just like all the pictures. I have no fear of most spiders, but the thought of being bitten by one of those scares me.

That's what I was thinking. I know black widows when I see them, but I'm not so certain about brown recluses. That does look like a fiddle to me, though, and although it doesn't show up so well in that photograph, the back has that hard shell-like appearance that seems to be a characteristic of some of them. That's why I posted the photo; so someone else might confirm or put to rest my suspicions. I'm glad it was dead, but now I'm worried that living ones might be lurking in my favorite reading spot.

Recluse spiders do indeed lurk in outdoor structures, like gazebos, porches, garages, etc. And they are aggressive/defensive of 'their' territory. One of my coworkers was bitten last week by one after working in his yard.
They almost always bite twice - you won't feel it - and people react differently to their venom - which can, in extreme cases, cause extensive tissue loss at the bite sites.

I'd recommend using an outdoor fogger, or area spray, in your gazebo - just to be safe.

Willy Pete would work, but it might not be so good for the gazebo.

One thing that makes me wonder as to the identity of the spider as a brown recluse is its size. I'd always thought brown recluse spiders were small, but this fellow is rather large. Then again, looking online, I see some are indeed rather hefty.

When it comes to spiders, I do NOT take prisoners...

I don't think twice about jumping off a 1500 ft cliff or exploring a ship wreck 100 feet down. Spending a night or two lost and alone in the woods doesn't even raise my eyebrows. But let just ONE spider... even a Daddy Long Legs, which I KNOW (intellectually but not emotionally,) are harmless scuttle within a meter of me, and I'm ready to cry and call for my mother.

Ok, with all of the strange things I've done, this has got to be probably in the top 10. Not daring, not scary, just kind of. ... odd.

I co-moderate the face book page for our little town and the south county around it. The prime goal for this page is to share events, buy, sell, trade, looking for work, found animals and so on. So last night this kid (youngman) put out a query for anyone that might have a koi pond that wasn't being used, it seems his pond had developed a leak and he's waiting on parts to fix it. I told him I'd love to help, I certainly have a pond but it's almost a half acre and I had no idea how he would get them again. So we tossed ideas back and forth; he thought putting them in a net might work, I thought they would get tangled, i thought maybe getting a play pen and putting

I mentioned out loud, "She's a large one" in regards to Beatrice, and Chris looked over and said, "What is that?" I told him it was a spider and he said, "In New Guinea, maybe!!" I replied that I thought Pooh was in NC and so now he thinks you have miniature windows. I can't convince him that Beatrice is really that big, LOL.

Thanks for the Stella ambush pictures!
