Currently reading The Golden Notebook which I'm finding great but really dense. I'm not sure what I think of Lessing's structural choices, but I'm leaning towards liking them. I'm also about three-hundred pages into Libba Bray's The Sweet Far Thing but I've had to take a break because I'm kind of between hating it and wanting to set myself on fire because it's so boring.

I actually read "Perfume" back when it came out and thoroughly enjoyed it, but I have yet to read "The Pigeon."

Finished "The Science of Shakespeare: A New Look at the Playwright's Universe" by Dan Falk. An interesting book on the state of scientific knowledge in England in Shakespeare's time.

Currently enjoying "The Glory of Their Times: The Story of the Early Days of Baseball Told by the Men Who Played It" by Lawrence Ritter. I became aware of this book when it was nominated by GA Russell for the July book club. Basically an oral history of baseball covering the first third of the 20th century. Some great anecdotes here, such as Davy Jones talking about Germany Schaefer stealing first base from second base

, and Sam Crawford talking about barnstorming around Nebraska in a farm wagon before he broke into the majors.

Makes me want to watch Ken Burn's "Baseball" again.

That sounds interesting. I read his In Search of Time: The Science of a Curious Dimension a few years ago and enjoyed it immensely. I'll have to download a sample to remind myself to buy the book when I have a chance to read it. Dan Falk is a very good writer.

Just finished "T.N.T: Telzey and Trigger" by James H. Schmitz. This is the second (of four) collections of his "Hub Federation" stories published by Baen. A very enjoyable SF collection. Schmitz is a greatly underestimated author, to my mind.

This completes my Baen reading for July 2000; on now to August 2000.

I've been reading every book, read or unread. I'm thinking that perhaps I should switch to reading only unread books, because I'm not making any headway - I'm reading about a month's worth of books every month, so my backlog is remaining constant at about 14 years

I have that one, but haven't read it yet. I've been looking for new authors to read and I'll push that one higher on the list.

I'm currently reading Blackcollar by Timothy Zahn in hopes of finding something as enjoyable as his Quadrail series. So far, I'm disappointed.

I quite enjoyed the "Blackcollar" trilogy, I must say, but I don't think I've read his "Quadrail" series. Who publishes them?

Blackcollar certainly isn't bad, but it feels like it's missing something and I can't quite put my finger on it. It's also possible that I'm just disappointed that I'm finished with the other series and I'm treating Blackcollar like a rebound relationship. I haven't finished the first one yet and I'll probably read the second in the series, anyway, just to see if it grows on me.

Finally back to reading. Enjoying the next installment in the DCI Banks series - Wednesday's Child (Peter Robinson). Loving it so far!
