A Gift Card seems to be the recommended method. I've just got one myself, but I haven't actually used it yet.

@bookmarked my recollection is that India new site doesn't have PayPal as an option.

You may need to buy the gift Card from the Aus site.

Search for either fbone or Anaemic Oak's post (I can't remember now which of the 2 it is) and they advise how to go about gifting the card to yourself. You'll find the posts maybe 3 or 4 pages back.

It probably varies from credit card company, but I just sent an e-mail to Chase to tell them I was buying stuff from India and haven't had any problems.

@pdurrant
Thanks, I'm trying the gift card.

@Lynx-lynx
The Paypal option shows up on Kobo-India, using the old-style checkout, but it gives me the error message above. The error appears before Kobo tries to hand off to Paypal site.
I got the gift card from the UK site since I already have an account there. Of course, Paypal adds on a 2.5% rate exchange fee but I guess I was going to get hit with some sort of fee no matter what.

@mgbino
Thanks but the gift card idea sounded like it would be less of a hassle.

There are a few kobo Slick still for sale on Amazon US (of all places...). A guest blogger reviewed the Slick for my blog this weekend. She found it nice as a second reader/backup reader. Kobo no longer sells it so far as I know. The most attractive thing about it for me is that it has an SD slot. My mom has been thinking of getting a reader, but she only has internet when I visit (or one of my brothers) so we've been steering her away from them. But at 25 dollars, it might be a nice toy for her.

Mini doesn't have a SD slot. It's the only one in the current lineup that doesn't have a SD slot.

It's a fabulous reader though. Only thing is that the original kepub books are getting bigger and bigger and they can easily fill up a Mini.

Ah, thanks. My bad. The review and closeout is for the Slick pocket, not the mini. I thought those were the same thing so I called it the mini! Sorry about that. The reviewer mentioned the SD slot--she had the product name right, but I thought the two were one and the same. Sorry about that!

Interesting device. Note that while it links to the Kobo store in its software, it's not a Kobo device (in the sense that Kobo themselves sell/support it). Not that that's a problem, just pointing it out so folks know. I don't know what kind of customer service it any you'll get on the device. I've heard of the company, but not what their support or quality is like.

I was pretty confused, especially after I figured out it isn't a mini. The company listed is kobo so both me and the reviewer...assumed it was a kobo device, but you're right, I can't find it on their site. She did buy books and read ebooks on the device (that was part of the test for the review).

I'm actually thinking it might make a nice music player. The one I have is so dang hard to use, I hate the thing. For an audio book, it's nearly impossible to use (I hook it up to my car when traveling for the audio books and let me tell you at my age when the controls are that small and every button is multi-function...It takes me longer to start the dang book than get to my destination!)

Also sorry to interrupt the last-minute use of coupon codes, but I just noticed that a bunch of Open Road-published George Harmon Coxe mysteries are 2.99 rupees in Kobo India, and a bunch more are 142 rupees - and couponable.

A great way (IMO) to use up some Kobo codes before Kobo expires them...
