Kindle 4.1.1 with tequila 1.0.6.211 will not reboot

Hi,

I recently purchased a Kindle 4.1.1 which I hope to turn into an e-ink display following these instructions - http://www.ponnuki.net/2012/09/kindleberry-pi/

Step 1 is to jailbreak the Kindle, and I have been following these instructions for that - https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kind...king#Jailbreak

In summary:
  1. Plug in the Kindle and copy data.tar.gz and ENABLE_DIAGS to the Kindle's USB drive's root
  2. Safely remove the USB cable and restart the Kindle (Menu -> Settings -> Menu -> Restart)
  3. Once the device restarts into diagnostics mode, select "D) Exit, Reboot or Disable Diags" (using the 5-way keypad)
  4. Select "R) Reboot System" and "Q) To continue"
  5. Wait about 20 seconds: you should see the Jailbreak screen for a while, and the device should then restart normally
  6. After the Kindle restarts, you should see a new book titled "You are Jailbroken", if you see this, the jailbreak has been successful.

I can't get past step 4. The tequila UI just reboots to itself (and only when I hit the left arrow on the directional pad, I might add, selecting "Q) To continue" does nothing. I can't load the Kindle OS at all.

What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

-Peter

Basically the problem is that when I reboot I just end up back in the Tequila bootloader. How can I get back into the Kindle OS?

run one of the diagnostic tests before trying to exit.

this will create an *.xml file, whose absence is preventing the exit from diags mode.

pick a relatively 'harmless' diag test to run (and STAY AWAY FROM ANYTHING LIKE: 'erase all' !!!!!)

Thanks for the tip. That was the problem (the missing file diagnostic_logs/device_info.xml).

I'm surprised more people don't have this problem, since the instructions at the wiki here - https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kind...king#Jailbreak as well as the readme file do not mention copying the diagnostic_logs/device_info.xml file from the kindle-jailbreak-k4-1.6.N jailbreak directory.

Thanks again!

also you can update that wiki.

Huh. Good to know, will fix the package/wiki ASAP, AFAIR this is the first time someone reported this for the K4 (until now, we were only aware that it was needed for most Touch released since the EU release/5.1.x).

EDIT: Or not, there's a very decent chance I messed up when rewriting the instructions (... last february...), so thank you for the detailed report & investigation .

@NiLuJe: something like this?

Yep, simply entering that single entry, and exiting again, is enough - no need to run any actual tests. I'm pretty confident that I also tried this on a K4 with the same outcome (=working), but I'm not 100% sure anymore (must be Alzheimer or so, I guess ), so please re-test it if you can.

@ixtab: Ha! Thanks, will do. Unfortunately, I'm not sure anymore if the K4 I have on hand actually has a diags build with the log file requirements, which might explain why I completely forgot about it.

I'll check .
