Newbie kindle user needs some help
Hi folks...
I just got my brand new Kindle 4 Black (5th gen) and decided to jailbreak it to put some nice screensavers. Due some lack of knowledge and excitation, I tried to follow this guy's tutorial to root it, but I didn't care for the fact that the guy's kindle is a 4th gen and its firmware is probably diferent of mine. I was able to follow all the steps until the putty part, where it should connect to the kindle and do some command line stuff. Then the error "network error - connection refused" appeared. So, I tried to get out of the diagnostic mode by pressing power button for 20secs, and now my screen is black and when I press the power button the screen flicks for some seconds and becomes black again. I have some middle-knowledge about computers, and have had rooted some android devices in the past. I thought I was good enough for jailbreaking it easily, but brick'd my new favorite gadget. Help me please ![]() ![]() |

Carefully read the comments attached to that video.
Do any of them sound familar now? All of them maybe. ![]() (When that author first changed a file on the Kindle's fat32 file system and then unplugged the cable **without** doing the "safely remove" step was the time to close that video.) You both have what is called a "K4" on this forum, but probably different firmware versions. The quick and easy way out for you at this point: Use Kubrick on it to get back to the "factory stock" image + plus a few of the MR basics (all of which are harmless). Note: Your device isn't actually "bricked" - but the process of recovery from that condition takes longer and more skill than to just use the Kubrick wizard. ![]() But now I've just had another problem. It was working ok, so I decided to go on with the screensaver change and rebooted the kindle. Guess what? It has now came back to the system diags screen. |

There is a file that is created by running any of the diagnostics, that is required to exit the diags mode. Also, you need to remove that ENABLE_DIAGS file from the user storage. Sorry - don't have one of those devices running in front of me at the moment - so I have to be a bit inexact . . . . 1) Fumble around in the diags menu and sub-menus until you see the "export file system" (or "export usb" or somesuch) - Select that ; Plug cable into pc ; Delete the ENABLE_DIAGS file; Safely remove and/or eject ; Remove cable. 2) Once again in the diags menu . . . Pick one of the "harmless" diagnostics to run (battery report should be safe at all times) ; Follow the on-screen directions to step through the diagnostic **NOW** the missing file will have been created and you can use the usual "exit diags" menu path and it will really exit. ![]() 99) Use one of our K4 screen saver hacks. I think there are several for the K4 - check in the forum master index sticky under "K4". |

Yeah, he writes some of the really good stuff here. Everything that people post here is well tested and commented on. A lot of the stuff here is "better than commercial quality" firmware (and I include the stuff that lab126 sometimes ships). |

That launcher gives the end-user a wide choice of "button" (screen gui) add-ins - - - That would probably be a good target for translations. This forum does not support translations, but our Wiki does: https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/KUAL_What%27s_New And since it was only recently that Amazon started distributing the Kindle in your country; You have lots of topics to choose from to write about. ![]() |
