Obscure Vote • April 2013
Help us choose the April 2013 selection to read for the MR Literary Club! The poll will be open for two days.
The vote is multiple choice. You may vote for as many or as few as you like. A discussion thread will begin shortly after a winner is chosen. In the event of a tie, there will be a one-day non-multiple-choice run-off poll. In the event that the run-off poll also ends in a tie, the tie will be resolved in favour of the selection that received all of its initial nominations first. Select from the following works: Oroonoko by Aphra Behn Spoiler:
The Silent Duchess (La lunga vita di Marianna Ucrìa) by Dacia Maraini Spoiler:
This Is the End by Stella Benson Spoiler:

It doesn't make any sense to vote for all books, does it!?
Seeing it from the bright sight: I will be happy with every book that wins this month! |

The nominations were fantastic this month. I knew absolutely nothing that was nominated so everything's an adventure.
That said, I mainly voted for the smaller non-poetry options. |

Phew - that was really tough, as I think they all sound terrific. So I finished up voting for everything except the Stefan Zweig because I'm having trouble tracking it down. (But if it wins, I'll try harder!)

In case it helps, Chess was also published as The Royal Game, the title of the copy at my local university. So I'm set, except for the making up my mind part!

Thanks, issy and caleb. I have now found it in Kobo asThe Royal Game. I'm a bit wary of Amazon because when I tried to buy a copy of The Conquest of the Incas from them, they wanted to put it in the cloud rather than download it to my computer, which meant I couldn't do the conversion.
It's a close contest at the moment! |

Just a couple of comments. That should be This Is the End by Stella Benson The link to for Chess Story in the MR library is broken, it does not appear that that title is available even in German among Zweig's works. |

I have fixed what I can, but the poll is unalterable so it will have to remain as is. As for the link, I've deleted it, and I wonder if it has to do with the mass library clearance they're doing because of the new copyright rules they're following? |

No, the link must have been broken otherwise, it still works:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=204228 Fortunately!! You really scared me, I was afraid this was a first sign of the new copyright rules here (although it perfectly fits the life+70 law). |

I added the link back in. Maybe it had something to do with the way I copied and pasted it the first time.

Really close race and I would enjoy either of the top runners. I recently came across Zweig as I think his original German works came into public domain this year (?) and I was interested in tracking down something from him. This might be an opportunity. But Oroonoko is also really interesting to me. I feel that either way, I win.

If Chess Story wins, there is a cost-effective version available for Kindle in a new translation by David Barrett for $2.28.
http://www.amazon.com/Chess-ebook/dp...s=Stefan+Zweig It is also available at Amazon.co.uk equivalently priced at £1.53. Last edited by fantasyfan; 04-06-2013 at 06:46 AM. |

For ePub people I found it in Kobo for $A4.00 or so (can't remember exactly as I had a 30% off voucher so it cost me very little) called simply Chess - about half the price of the version called The Royal Game also in Kobo!
I decided to get it whether it wins or not, as it sounded so interesting. And while I was looking, I saw he was the author of Letter from an Unknown Woman which was filmed way back with Maximilian Schell and Joan Fontaine, though I don't know how faithful or otherwise it was to the book. You learn something new every day! |
