Hello All,
Could you please help me find an ebook reader that can take a beating? I backpack quite a bit and will be stuffing the reader into my cramped backpack. What is the sturdiest and strongest ebook reader that can withstand the elements? A small form factor is preferred as well. I'm looking at the PocketBook 360 (http://www.pocketbookreader.com/PocketBook_360.html) and it seems to fit my needs. Are there better readers out there for me? What do you recommend? ![]() |

There are no tough eInk readers; just tough cases to carry them in.

Yes, the Pocketbook 360 is a good choice for your requirements as well as the Cybook Opus which is sold out at the moment. The Opus has a very good battery time, that may be important for you, too. But the two posters above me are right, the most important thing is to have a sturdy case.

Ah okay. I guess since there are a lot more accessories for the Kindle I'd be able to more easily find a sturdy case for it?

I don't know about how tough most of the accessories are. I have read about Klear Kase and it looks like a pretty tough case. If you are backpacking you want to minimize weight while protecting your Kindle. You are probably going to have to do a bit of research to figure out what works best for you case wise and then what readers are associated with that case.

My recommendation is a cheap, quality ereader with a sturdy case and neoprene slip cover combo to put it in. That way if something happens to it, you're not out big bucks. If you're in the US, a new Nook Touch can be had right now for $69 at Target ($99 + $30 GC). And on Black Friday, you might be able to get either a Kindle Touch for $79 at Staples ($99 + $20 GC) or a Kindle NT for $64 also at Staples ($79 + $15 GC). |

My daughter has done a fair bit of adventure backpacking with her Sony 350 in a standard Sony cover (with a rubber band around to be extra secured). The cover gives decent protection an she does use her brain when packing and don't just throw the reader in there.
I think the small form factor helps in keeping the reader from bending/twisting. |

Don't discount the idea of spending a bit more to get a model that has 3G coverage. Your chances of being able to quickly get a new book while in the middle of nowhere are remarkably good with 3G, a great deal less with WiFi only.
Another consideration is the support policy of the reader you buy. IF something bad happens to it, you want a company that has an excellent reputation for standing behind their product. Amazon is clearly the leader here. I agree with Harry -- a good case is the single best protection you can buy. |

I keep my Kindle Keyboard in a Kindle Leather Cover and never take it out. It offers excellent protection while reading. If I need to take my Kindle out of the house for any reason, I place it (w/ cover) inside a Body Glove neoprene slip case that zips shut. Now it's protected for travel.

I'm in Singapore at the moment (travelling) and will be here for some time.
It seems a Kindle is the way to go. Any recommendations on the casing? |
