No, it is not really important. Some wp and dtp applications let you use different colors etc for diacritics so that they simply stand out from letters.

Purpose in pointing this out was merely this that Kindle pdf rendering seems better because it apparently uses shades of grey to smooth the edges of the text whereas duokan appears to use black only and this, I think (I may be completely off the mark, though) accounts for relatively poor quality of text rendering in duokan, which otherwise outperforms kindle when it comes to handling and navigation etc of pdf files. I hope Kindle fw makers take cues from duokan. I cannot stand Kindle's inability to access table of contents in a PDF file.

I will try Duokan lite on my kindle 3.Of course,I will share the information on this forum(but I don't use internet very often).I have send the Duokan lite file to FethryDuck,and I believe he will share his experience about Duokan lite to you.But,as all you know,maybe it is better not to distribute the file to public before Duokan team themselves change it to open-test.

Currently,the Duokan lite only support kindle 3.

Notes about installation:
1.If you want to use Duokan Compatible with Duokan lite,you should install Duokan before Duokan lite.
2.Duokan and Duokan lite system file can't be changed and exchanged,or the Duokan would not work.
3.If you have installed the Duokan released after December 5th 2010,switch to Duokan system first,then you can easily replace the "DK_System" with the Duokan lite's "DK_System" folder and restart your kindle 3.But your first restarting will remain the OLD Duokan's boot screen.
4.If you have installed the Duokan released before December 5th 2010,you should switch to kindle original system and replace the "DK_System" with the Duokan lite's "DK_System" folder first.Then copy the three .bin files to kindle 3's root folder and update your kindle 3 in the kindle 3 original system.(the path of .bin file:"升级包”(original text,not be translated)> k3升级包(original text)> 3个bin文件(original text))
5.Duokan and Duokan lite has their own option of uninstall.

Thank you very much for these notes, darkofday ! Have only had a quick look, without any install attempt. ( have several upgrades to consider and prepare first )

I did post a suggestion about a "light" edition which could co-exist with the regular Duokan for several reasons/uses - but I am unsure if this version has anything to do with those ideas. Right now I try to figure out what/why some books crashes the regular Duokan system.

...ah, well ... the temptation got too strong !
- so, I simply did as you said and it did not work. Did run it from the regular Duokan, and nothing would ever show up. Update Error 3 ? in Amazon - but that did come up. New attempts and I finally had the new Duokan logo - and that was fun - but with only Chinese, terribly confusing !

Then all crashed - and it was not possible to get anything else then Amazon, which was not surprising when DK_system folder had dissappeared. New installs, and something is running, but now I have to study Chinese characters and try to figure out what the different buttons and functions are. ( that was somewhat expected, but I did believe I could get the regular Duokan back, but it does not look like it will at the moment )

If you don't know Chinese, this is probably not very interesting unless you are looking for trouble - or you happen to be somewhat weird ?

We seem to have the coding base right - while I have to rerun several tests.

It did seem to handle my other languages in this long "sort of English Duokan", and I have just tested a few more:

Icelandic, Polish, Czech, Hebrew, Greek, Maori, Japanese, Tagalog

the exception turned out to be Hebrew, BUT the layout of the text I tried did seem somewhat funny. So, no definitive answer yet.

( I cannot wait to see how it will work alongside the regular Duokan, but I may have screwed up something as that part don't seem active anymore. Should there have been a merger of the folders ? )

Wuhaha,I do not have tested the support for western language,but I love the new UI of Duokan lite.I think to translate the menu is the most important thing,I will do that.

BTW. They have some instruction, with screenshots. The sad part is that I cannot copy the Chinese words from those. ( if they only had those sentences in plain text, then the regular-instruction pages that was supplied with the Duokan regular software would have had some English support pages ages ago.

Btw. it is actually the wrong time of year for me to work with these things, but ... we'll see.

Let me just sum up a few things about Duokan-lite:

- it does not play music
- does not support anything other then plain text files.
( no epub,pdf,mobi,or what ever )
- no English menus, etc.

Of course - this is NOW - and where they will take it, I don't know.

An earlier idea I suggested - was somewhat like this:

-support unicode
-a dual system, i.e. function alongside the regular Duokan.
Almost like separate application in Windows, with cut&paste function. You may have a document up in different languages, just flip from Duokan-regular to Duokan-light. You may cut and paste words from D-lite to D-regular-dictionary for lookups.

Perhaps I should write a more detailed system description, if they would be interested. Anyway, they may have a pletora of other ideas - just included some of my wish list. But perhaps they do think along these lines, which would be a light/limited system compared to the more feature rich Duokan-regular version.

( I still have to read a bunch of what others might have said on their site, as like I said, they may have some very different ideas. )
