Kindle will never adopt epub, they'd lose too much control, or they think they would.
Either way its just not going to happen. |

The ipod supports the itunes format and mp3, and it doesn't seem to have suffered in market share. If Amazon allowed epub format, I think kindle owners would take that as a sign of Amazon's confidence and still make the majority of their purchases through Amazon. Just my .02

Amazon will adopt epub 2-3 years from now when all the readers that it can sell have been sold once that growth ends they will adopt other formats as long as they are growing they won't adopt other formats.

Inevitably, cheap knock-off ereaders will flood the market. I would assume these cheaper readers will be multi-format-capable, since their manufacturers would want to appeal to as broad an audience as possible and have no vested interested in selling books to "match" their ereader, as Amazon does. Amazon will still have a hold over their existing customers, and great appeal to the potential customers, but why risk losing those potential customers over a silly issue like being able to read alternate formats? It would be senseless for them to not offer this capability.

I foresee EPUB and Amazon's AZW will continue to live side-by-side just like MP3 and Microsoft's MVA for a very long time. Not an ideal world for consumers, but.... what can we do as long as there are enough people to continue buying ebooks and Kindle from Amazon?
