Kindle hypotheticals
If Amazon for some reason went bust (not that this seems likely at the present time), what would happen to all the Kindles out there?
Would Kindle users be able to buy books from anywhere, for instance? |

Well you could certainly buy from those DRM-free ebooksellers (baen books is the best IMHO). IIRC fictionwise has a Kindle section.
I honestly feel IF Amazon did go bust, the remaining assets would get sold, some publisher/ebookstore would buy the rights to mobi and start selling ebooks in that format. The size of the Kindle market would be too great to ignore. You considering a Kindle? |

As for DRM'd stuff it would have to be bought in some other format and disinfected then converted. That or some alternate non-Amazon firmware would be needed. IIRC there is some firmware floating around that lets a Kindle read ePub's, but I don't know anything about it really. |

Amazon headquarters and Kindles are linked via a single self destruct button that Bezos would depress himself.

I'd buy epub books, remove the DRM and convert them using the mobigen application (KindleGen). And tell everybody how to do it.
