New site: The ApplePhone Addict

Looking for all the scoop and follow-up discussions about the new iPhone recently announced by Apple? Be sure to bookmark the newest addition to the "Addict" blog family created by Sammy McLoughlin of Palm Addict fame.

If you're looking for a quick peek at what the iPhone talk is all about, this article is a nice introduction from USA Today.

For one industry analyst's early look at the phone and it's impact on the smartphone market, be sure to check out the comments from Michael Mace at Mobile Opportunity.

The iPhone is basically a phone and a multimedia device all wrapped up in a sleek new form factor, and intended to build on the success of the iPod and iTunes online music store. The phone has a nice full body screen that is used for both display and as a keypad. New interface techniques have been introduced, many involving multiple touch points, such as "squeezing" two fingers to shrink an image.

iPhone will run OSX, but apparently it is a closed device, so it will not run just any third party application. There are fancy sensors that allow it to turn off the touch screen input when you put it up to your face, and to know when to display in landscape or portrait orientation. It will be interesting to see how well all the new gee-whiz features work in the real world.

The phone is a Cingular exclusive in the U.S., and with a 2-yr contract it will cost $499 for the 4 gig version. Another $100 will get you 8 gig storage, but neither phone will be available until around June.

I'm buying this. And hopefully getting rid of my IPAQ. I still have my Sony Reader (although I have heard that the Baen Bar might be nearing some kind of deal for a better eink device). For the price I paid for my IPAQ, my cell phone and my ipod, this is a pretty good price.

As long as the iPhone can be extended with additional apps, it does pretty much what I want it to do. I remember buying CF cards for my IPAQ to get 1 GB of space and that being over $100.00. I don't listen to thousands of songs at a time. I generally listen to 4 recycling playlists. and the 8 gb of memory would store all my ebooks and then some.

Since, at present, my PPC and my phone are doing their jobs well, I'm not planning on upgrading either anytime soon. However, I've considered getting a smartphone when my PPC finally does give up the ghost (and knowing my wife, not a moment sooner!), so when that day comes, I'll take a look at this, too.

As long as I can continue to backup and share files with my PC, and duplicate the other functions I need a PPC for right now, I'll consider it. If I find out it's really nothing more than a glorified phone/iPod thing, the heck with it. But I'm keeping an open mind (and a closed wallet) for now.

No. It can't be. Steve Jobs just said so. Look at

"Cingular doesn't want to see their West Coast network go down because some application messed up."

So Steve is already participating everyone in the network to use iPhones?

Apparently, from listening to the news here, in Canada, Rogers networks will be the provider of the iPhone.

YOu could read the ebooks using the browser, if nothing else. I'm still getting it. It just may not be my perfect device. Everything is hackable, isn't it?

It's always amusing when people make these fake unboxing galleries. This guy didn't even attempt to hide the fakiness of the phone though

Yea the iPhone is nice and I was fairly impressed with it while watching the keynote (once site traffic allowed me to watch.) But I haven't owned a cell phone since 1999 and I guess if I haven't been tempted by now this won't do the trick either
