Have a Kindle. Like it so far.
- Can e-books other than Amazon.com books be used on my Kindle? - Why are some books, available in US, not available in Kindle format in Canada? James |

I believe the publisher sets the territories where the ebook can be sold. Amazon checks your ISP and either allows or denies the ability to purchase that ebook. I would check the author's website and find out whether they have an alternate solution for other territories (direct sales, etc).

Welcome to Mobileread, jhindle. Look around MR and pick up on some of the stories. It's a great place to learn about your Kindle, find free ebooks, and meet many nice people.
Your question comes up VERY often and is rattled around the world. Mostly with the use of bad words. ![]() There is an Amazon Kindle section that you'll find helpful. As well as General Discussions where Geo Restrictions get roasted a bit. In spite of Geo Restrictions, you'll soon have more to read than you may now suspect. Look around, you've found a treasure trove. |

Canadian Kindles benefit from the same 3G connectedness as US, and many other countries. There is no additional fee for surfing the web, wikipedia and the Amazon Kindle store directly from your Kindle -- it's built-in to the initial $189 purchase price. It's important to note that the Kindle is an e-reader and not optimised for web-browsing -- so this is nice to have in a pinch, as opposed to a substitute for a laptop.
At the Amazon Kindle store, you'll find some e-books available in Canada that are NOT available in the US; and sometimes the Canadian e-book price is cheaper. Generally, the Canadian titles are up to $2 more expensive because the Whispernet delivery fee is baked into the price. This is changing: increasingly, titles are free of this extra fee. The major drawback is the inability to display ePub files (DRM or open), which is the standard of many other devices and the Overdrive system used by the public library. Look for mobi, prc or Kindle as the format to download and you'll find tons of great material -- including right here at Mobileread thanks to members who have formatted books for your enjoyment. |
