VGA vs QVGA resolution

Hello everybody,

I own a Palm Tungsten T3 that I use a lot for reading (ereader). Now I want to buy a new one and the Acer N311 is my first option. First, I would like to have the answer for two questions:

1. Any comment about the Acer N311? Is there someone in this forum with this PDA that uses it for reading?

2. What about the difference between Pocket PCs with VGA (640x480) and with QVGA (320x240) resolutions? Can any of you give an oppinion?

Greetings from Spain,

L.

Not a PPC user, but I can give some advice on resolutions... Higher is almost always better. Only exception is if the OS is very limited in some way and can't/doesn't use larger sized fonts (resulting in hard to read screens).

By this I mean, say, a 3" screen at 240x320 vs. 3" screen at 480x640, both using fonts 12 pixels in height - the fonts would be a quarter as large (half as tall, half as wide). As far as I know, most fonts are determined in better, relative, sizes, however, so it should be a non-issue.

I don't remember, but weren't there some people that preferred lower resolution for ebook reading? I'm in the "hi-res is better" camp, but I'm not sure everyone is!

Hi !
I own a Dell Axim x50v and I must say that, although I didn't like reading ebooks on my old iPaq h2210 (QVGA), I stopped reading paper books as soon as I tried the Axim's VGA display...
I posted on my blog about this a while ago : http://www.davidsoft.org/posts/on-eb...eading-devices

Cheers,
David.

I have a Palm T3 and an Axim X50v. The screen on the X50V looks wonderful compared with the T3 and is noticeably better for web browsing - though the unpredictability of the font sizes in Pocket IE is rather annoying. But for ebooks the Palm is perfectly adequate. And when it comes to ease of use and responsiveness, the T3 wins hands down (however. it sounds like the newer NVFS Palms are slower to respond than the T3 - I haven't tried them personally)

There are other considerations as well. The only deterrent I can think to VGA might be that it takes a bigger slice of the processor time. The problem with that is poorer battery life, at least that seems to be my experience. That being said though the viewing experience outweighs the problem.
