Dust

Anyone else have dust get in between the screen on thiei 600? I just noticed today that there is fuzz and dust that appears to be between the e-ink screen and the touch screen it was really noticeable when there was something black on the screen under it. would you exchange it for this reason?

The 700 had this same issue, except it was much more noticeable because of the backlight.

This is exactly the reason I posted a thread about weather/environemtal sealing on readers....just of the sort found on any number of Point 'n Shoot (~<= $250 range P-n-S cameras) or DSLR cameras.

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...hlight=weather

No dust should be able to work it's way into your reader...hope it gets sorted out for you.

That sucks pretty hard man. I hope this isn't something that's going to happen to mine. Had you been keeping yours in the included sleeve or any other sort of case?

Seriously do you truly believe that should matter one iota? Or are ya thinking that something in the case/sleeve material might be the culprit? If the device was meant to work only in a case then that should be built-into/onto the reader. I just hope it's a fluke or there is another small reader off my list.

okay, its Official. I think I'm gonna stay away from sony for the rest of my life,

they cant keep dust out of their devices with $0.01 worth of tape.

my psps, playstations, my 700, its just annoying. they had 1 thing to fix with the 600, and they removed the light to make it less noticeable, instead of fixing it.

I had it in the sony cover not the one with the light the other one. I did go exchange it and guess what the new one had dust under there right outta the box but its less noticeable on this one unless theres something really black on the screen so Im guessing they all have it just depends on whether you notice it so I will prolly just stick with this one unless i decide its really really annoying me.

I was asking because I was wondering if fuzz from the included case was to blame (as I keep mine in the included case as well). And no, I don't consider that an excuse or a valid explanation. Obviously no dust should be making it past the internal seals.

I very much hope this is not the norm with the PRS-600. I'm pretty anal. A little speck of dust under my screen would drive me batshit. Also, dust under the screen right out of the box (as weasty claims) is especially NOT COOL, sinced that suggests it got there when the thing was being manufactured!

Wonder if it's a design problem or a manufacturing facilities problem. I hope the reader is assembled in a clean room with the screens also made in a dust free zone and that all workers follows procedures.

But since Sony has been making TV's for so long, I would expect they would know how to keep dust out of their screens.

Can anyone answer these questions?

Is there any 'space' between the eInk screen and the touch screen layer of the PRS-600 in which dust *can* accumulate? Or, is this just dust that got on the eInk screen *before* the application of the touch layer during assembly?

There was 'space' to facilitate the side-lighting on the PRS-700, but that 'space' has been eliminated on the PRS-600. IMO I find it incredulous that Sony would remove the side-lighting just so that any other dust problems, not caused by the side-lighting, would not be revealed!

[Afterthought] The screen image has improved after the removal of the side-lighting, so that could be *one* good reason for removing it.

I saw this issue with the 700 release and the many threads about it on here and hoped it had been resolved with the 600........seems it may not have been, which is crazy as sony were well aware of the issue before the 600 so I would have hoped they would make the necessary adjustments to the design of the 600 to avoid this issue once again. Sadly it seems not.
I am too scared to look close at my 600 now, I will freak if theres dust in it, Im such a perfectionist I know it will drive me crazy.....plus of course the fact that its unacceptable in the first place, whatever the cause, factory dust/screen seal.
I was loving my 600, now Im gonna worry about it.......hope this is an isolated case, though I suspect not as the same happened with the 700......

Well the first one clearly mainly had fuzz under the screen I know it got there after I had bought it and used it for 3 days. The second one I have that has the dust out of the box the dust seems metallic if i angle it right it reflects light like a piece of metal I have found 3 specs so far. Im trying to decide if its worth messing with returning it for a different one or live with staring at the specs cuz they are driving me bannannas since I know they are there. what would you guys do would you give a try and hope third times the charm or would you just try to deal with the specs?

I have a nick on my 505 screen (which was my fault, so maybe that explains my indifference) but I'm pretty used to it. Sometimes it bothers me. And that's a black spot on my screen. Not big, but presumably bigger than the dust you have.

I just don't have a lot of hope for you that annother one will be better. So it's kind of a live with it or get a non touch screen device.
