eBooks at sea

I live most of the year on my boat in the British Virgin Islands where I have wi-fi service on board. If I purchase a Sony or Amazon eBook reader while I am here in the US, will I be able to download books when I am out of the country?

Welcome to Mobileread. Others will be along in a moment, possibly with more details.

The answer to your question is yes, with caveats.

To buy from the Kindle ebook store without hassle, you need to have a a US Credit Card with a US address.

To buy from the Sony US store, there are some similar problems.

But there are lots of other ebook stores that will take your money.

And so long as you've got internet access and a computer, you can just download to the computer and copy the books onto the ebook reader.

Welcome to MR So long as you have a computer with some kind of internet access you can buy books for the Sony reader outside of the US. I would imagine it is possible for the Kindle too, but I don't know.

Thanks ! Here is what Sony's ereader support site says about their online store:

Question
Is the eBook Store available outside the United States?

Answer
The eBook Store from Sony is currently available in the United States and Canada
only.
However, from what I am hearing I should be OK as I have a credit card with a US billing address.

You can buy books for the Sony from places like BooksOnBoard & Fictionwise, too - I'm in the UK, so can't use the Sony store, but have bought plenty of books from those two places for my 505. Also, having a US registered credit card means you will probably be able to get around the geographic restrictions some of the books have.

Hi camdobins and welcome to MobileRead. My wife and I spent a week in Tortola earlier this year and really liked it. Also, I seem to recall I bought a book from Sony while I was there ('Painkiller').

That's exactly my plan for retirement & one of the main reasons I got my Sony. There's loads of 'free' reading available to download all over the net & visiting friends can always bring you memory cards filled with reading material when they come to visit or mail it to you on a flash drive (In antistatic bag to prevent accidental 'zapping') or burned to a CD.

OT....do you have a blog or website where we could take a 'peek' at your envious lifestyle?

Welcome to Mobileread, cambodins!

Living on a boat. . .hmmm. . .well, at least it sounds better than camping! (I am a known camping hater. ) As they've already told you, there are ways to download books from estores, but you can also download tons of free ebooks right here at MobileRead for both the Sony and the Kindle. Good luck with your decision.

Happy Reading.

PS. I really do think it would be nice to spend time on a boat. It sounds very romantic.

With everyones' help I have purchased a Sony PRS-505 on line from Walmart...cheapest I could find. $236.00 I will pick it up at my nearest store in Champaign, IL.
Sorry, I have no web site; but if you give me your email I will send you a photo of my shrimp boat converted to my liveaboard "yacht."

Cambodins, you can upload a picture from your computer to your profile page here at MR. There is a section on your USER CP page called Pictures and Albums where this can be done. From an expat Illinoisian, I would love to see a picture of your yacht.
