Received a Repalcement Kindle from Amazon and I can't read the Periodocals that I
purchased and archived.
How do I make the archived periodicals readable on the replacement Kindle. I have bought and paid for them from Amazon. Is there a program available to do this with? |

If you had the serial number from the previous Kindle, you could have gotten the PID and then stripped off the DRm. But without the serial number or PID of your previous Kindle, the archived periodicals are lost due to being infected with DRM. There's nothing you can do about this without the PID.

The serial number is on the original Kindle's box and under the rubber back cover.
Once you find the serial number, use kindlepid (1st step of kindlefix for MOBI to AZW) to convert it to a PID. Then use mobidedrm with the Kindle's PID to strip the DRM. I have never tried this on a periodical, but if they are AZW's it should work. For anyone archiving Kindle periodicals on their PC, it would be a good idea to find the Kindle's PID right now and confirm that the PID and mobidedrm work on at least one ebook. You can check this by opening the DRM-free version using Windows MobiPocket Reader. Don't forget to store the PID in a safe place. I don't know why so many newspapers and current events periodicals are fixated on DRM. Much of the material is on the web anyway and it has a limited shelf life. I just don't see piracy as a big problem in this case. One good reason to pay for a Kindle version is its search function and as an archive of complete versions for future reference. Since Amazon does not archive the master versions, the DRM makes old copies extremely fragile. |

I am PC literate but not to the point of your instructions above.
Are there step by step instructions for this procedure? I have asw-0.2. Is that mobidrm? Sorta lost with the procedure. |

Have you called support to ask them how this works (or does not work) with periodicals? I know it works with books, but since I don't subscribe to magazines or newspapers, I'm not certain how it would work in that case. |

As has been noted in other threads periodicals is only available for re-download a certain time. After that you have no way to transfer them to a new Kindle. They seem to assume that you should read periodicals directly and then throw them away.

Kindle Support says that they can only be read (periodicals) on the Kindle that they were originally downloaded to. They say that is what the publishers want. They did not take into consideration that Kindles break or that one may want to purchase a Kindle 2. I have been round and round with them on the subject and they sympathize but customer support is not in control. I would like to find out out to change the PID or serial # embedded in the file. After all I did buy and pay for them. ![]() |

i can smell a classaction brewing over this illegal DRM blocking of our legal rights to "fair use".

Many on this board may be savvy to DRM. I was not.
The DRM restriction was not disclosed to me until I had a Kindle that had to be replaced. (Periodicals only could be read on the Original Kindle downloaded to) This disclosure should have been made Before purchase of periodicals. I am sure that there are 1000's of periodical users that don't know this and never did. DRM is to protect against UNauthorized use and such, not legitamte use by the original purchaser. I was the purchaser NOT the Kindle that happend to be registered to me. |

Even the book issue with DRM has some issues. For example: If one should inherit upon death of an individuals Paid for Digital Books how is that to be handled? |
