shortcut for direct dictionary search?
So there is @web for google search, @store for store search & @wiki for wikipedia search. Is there a way to do a direct definition search from the built-in dictionary?

Search the Kindle
Quote:
![]() ![]() [On the K1]Press the Search button; key the word you wish to search for; click "Go." The Kindle searches its index for all instances of that word. One choice will be "Dictionary." Confirm that selection and you will be rewarded with the [default] New Oxford American Dictionary definition. |

1) the "lookup" can be slow because the program has to scan the whole line of words and list the ones I want(for K1), and it could also be on the 2nd page of the "lookup", not to mention that more scholling & click is needed if I want to see a more detailed definition for the word. 2) sometimes I also want to look up a word that's not currently displayed on the page. You do know how the direct search for @web & @wiki work right? if so, you should know what I meant by "direct definition search". |

Not surprisingly, it's @dict.
The supported shortcuts are: @help - shows a list of shorcuts @dict - opens dictionary to work after @dict; i.e. @dict zebra @print - goes to kindle store @store - goes to kindle store @time - shows date and time @url - open web browser to address after url; i.e. @url www.mobileread.com @web - open web browser to address after web; i.e. @web www.mobileread.com @wiki - open web browser to wikipedia @wikipedia - open web browser to wikipedia Last edited by sirbruce; 03-04-2009 at 02:39 AM. |

Might be a Kindle 2 only feature? I type @dict hello, hit return, it changes to hello and opens the dictionary at hello.

I guess I'll just have to wait for the next firmware update and hopefully then amazon will implement some of the new features installed on K2. For K1 owners who also want these additional shorcuts, please send a request to amazon NOW! ![]() https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/conta...5Fid=200212360 |
