Trying to win favorite uncle award!

I acquired six Kindle 2s from 2009. All had bad batteries, so I got them very cheap (~$20). The real cost is going to come from the replacement batteries .

Well, one of them finally booted with a new battery, and I'm surprisingly impressed with how well it works. It really isn't that slow, and is perfectly fine once you get into a book. I reset it to remove the previous owner's data and sideloaded a bunch of books, mostly public domain works from Standard Ebooks. Great site, by the way.

Gave the Kindle to my 10-year-old niece, and she can't put it down. She absolutely loves it.

Moral of the story: Do you have an old e-reader? If so, fix it up and give it to a kid!

How do you put books in the Kindle 2? Do you buy ePub and convert to Mobi?

Some great books can be downloaded directly from [Standard Ebooks](https://standardebooks.org/) for no charge. A lot of books can also be purchased DRM-free through various sites, like Humble Bundle. And finally, some books on Kobo are DRM-free as well. Calibre does a wonderful job converting EPUBs to a compatible format for the Kindle 2.

And with ACSM Input and the DeDRM plugins for calibre, you can buy ePub with DRM from Kobo, strip the DRM, and convert to Mobi for the K2.

Well, hell buddy, don't forget Mobileread's HUGE library of absolutely FREE ebooks.

(I'll let you find the link.)

ADDED: I see it's already been suggested. Go for it.

Not all are public domain. Some are here under a creative commons license.
