Is it an optical illusion, or does the Kindle Paperwhite 2024 screen look better

I have been reading on an Amazon Kindle paperwhite 2022. Today I went on Facebook marketplace and found someone selling a paperwhite 2024 never used for $80. So I grabbed it. I just finished setting it up and I feel like the screen is a lot nicer on this model versus the previous model. I put the two up side-by-side and I’m not really seeing a huge difference when I look at them side-by-side, but when I’m holding the thing in my hand without the other device next to it and then put it down and pick up the other device by itself I feel like the 2024 device looks a lot better. Is this just an optical illusion playing tricks on my head or is the screen that much better on the 2024 device?

What color are the bezels?

A darker bezel will look better and make the screen look whiter.

A lighter bezel will emphasize that the screen is gray.

The eink screen quality can vary considerably even between devices of the same model, let alone different models.

It could be due to the Carta 1300 screen.

Well, they're Kindle Paperwhites, so they both have dark grey bezels.

That's good to know.

That's true. When I was watching comparison videos of the two devices, I didn't see a difference in the screens.I was just surprised to see a difference between devices when I held them in my hand.

I don't know how to describe it. They both look good, and they look really similar. But my brain really prefers the 12th gen.

I have to say that these devices are really fast and responsive for how resource constrained they are. The Kindle developers have done an amazing job optimizing Linux on these things.

Yes, modern Kindles are considerably faster than Nooks and Kobos (maybe recent Kobo models are fast too, my own devices are from 2021). If not for the limited UI and the decision to ditch physical buttons, I'd still use them. But for me, their drawbacks outweigh their advantages.

That's true. I have a pile of ereaders now, and I really like the page turn buttons on my Nook Glowlight 4 Plus and PocketBook Era Lite. But the Kindle is just so much faster. I jailbroke it and put KOReader on it, That helped a great dreal.

I was really interested in the 2026 Paperwhite Signature Edition along with the page turn button case, but not at that price point. With both the 2024 and 2026 editions supporting the new Amazon page turn remote, I hope someone comes out with some kind of cheap page turn case that uses Bluetooth.

I suspect some of that responsiveness is due to the MediaTek chipset being used. In my limited testing on a couple of Kobo ereaders, the MediaTek chipset and the eInk support hardware seem to be considerably faster. On a friend's Kindle Paperwhites, the MediaTek 8113 chipset seems to be noticeably faster than the Mediatek 8110 used in the Paperwhite 5.

It's probably that and the Carta 1300 panel, which is supposed to have 25% faster refreshes vs the Carta 1200 panel in the older unit.

I'm curious now how the Carta 1400 and Kaleido 4 panels will be. Supposedly the Kaleido 4 panels have much better color.
