Advantage or disadvantage
I'm currently using a Kobo Clara HD, work s great no problems at all but was looking for a change...just because LOL.
Is there any advantage or disadvantage of the Clara colour over what I'm currently using, software, actual physical reader, faster, slower or.....? I think I've read the display isn't as crisp but that's the only thing I've really heard which would be a deal breaker for me. |

A color screen is much darker than a black and white screen, and requires the frontlight to be higher to look the same. If you prefer to read with the light off, that's something to consider. A color screen looks noticeably worse with no light.

For comparison, I set my Clara BW to ~30 % brightness and my Clara Color to ~50 % brightness. And yes, that's subjectively brighter in lumen too, but otherwise there's not enough clarity.

The latest Kobos have USB-C connectors. Looks like the Kobo Clara colour has more RAM and Storage. And the newer Kobos can use Kobo's remote page turner.
mrmikey, if you are located in the US you may be able to see a Kobo at a Best Buy. |

Objectively, the Color is slightly faster than the BW, if you compare them side by side. Not sure why they didn't match the specs on both devices.

Thanks for the replies all. I don't see a compelling reason to upgrade yet. |

Keep the Clara HD, and do not downgrade to any Colour screen.
The Clara HD is the last painlessly upgradeable Kobo device. Book transfers can be done through WiFi between Kobo Uncaged and Calibre, so no cable needed for that. |

For the amount of times I connect to my PC from my Clara I'm going to stick to the cable for the little bit of extra work involved. Thanks for the heads up tho. |

Arguably, the Clara 2E would be the last painlessly upgradable Kobo device. It has an internal µSD card which can be replaced by a larger card.

Disadvantages: A much darker screen, background ‘graininess’ and poorer contrast, something that is more noticeable when the e-reader’s lighting is off and outdoors, and less noticeable indoors, at night and with the e-reader’s lighting on. Therefore, if you’re not interested in colour, there’s no point in switching to a Clara Colour. But if you’re interested in colour for whatever reason, the Clara BW (or your current Clara HD) won’t offer it. It all depends on what you want. Personally, I’m looking to buy a 6” colour e-reader (I have other colour e-readers in different sizes), and the Kobo Clara Colour is my top choice. |
