Q re: calibre metadata mgt, and sending it to a Kobo

I'm a new user of a Kobo Clara, and I learned from some long-timers here about how to use calibre to send books to the device.

Send>Eject>Wait>Disconnect>Reconnect>Update metadata on device>Eject>Read

Yet calibre has metadata mgt settings to update on the device at Send, or to Automatically keep in Sync.

Why is the former method the one to use, and not to allow or cause calibre to do it at Send or Auto?

I have it set to Auto. That means every time I connect my Kobo to calibre, it will update all metadata on the device to mirror that in the library.

Some people might prefer not to have calibre auto-manage metadata, but only for the books they send to their device.

The double connection is mainly for the series info. Because calibre can't set the series info unless the books are already on the device.

When you send books to your Kobo, they are not yet in the database until they are imported. Because of this, the extra metadata cannot be sent with the books because there are no database entries. Once there are database entries, then the metadata can be sent to your Kobo.

This is what you want Metadata management set to so when you plug in your Kobo after the import, the metadata gets updated.

So with that setting, a reconnect sends the metadata in the same way as manually updating it from the Device menu item?

Yes. You just get saved from having to remember to manually send it. For me, I send the books, let them import, use NickelMenu to reconnect and update the metadata. If for whatever reason, I skip the import, the next connect will take care of it.

It's a mindless repeated task. That says let the computer do it.
