What should I read next?

I'm really undecided about which book should I read next. Which one would you recommend me and why?

a) The Way of Shadows, by Brent Weeks
b) The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, by Robert Heinlein
c) The Sword of Shannara, by Terry Brooks
d) The Magic of Recluce, by L.E. Modesitt
e) Mistborn, by Brandon Sanderson
f) Little Brother, by Cory Doctorow
g) The Briar King, by Greg Keyes
h) Inspector Chen: Snake Agent, by Liz Williams
i) Sweet Silver Blues, by Glen Cook
j) Dream Thief, by Stephen Lawhead
k) Dune, by Frank Herbert
l) Cryptonomicon, by Neal Stephenson
m) Anathem, by Neal Stephenson
n) Altered Carbon, by Richard Morgan
o) Black Company, by Glen Cook
p) Assassin's Aprendice, by Robin Hobb
q) 1632, by Eric Flint
r) Pillars of the Earth, by Ken Follet
s) Mistborn 2: The Well of Ascension, by Brandon Sanderson
t) Mistborn 3: Hero of the Ages, by Brandon Sanderson

(sigh) I should only buy one book at a time...

Thank you for your input.

Edit: In grey what I've read, in bold what I'm reading. In pink, any reading I've stoped (either didn't like it or just postponed its reading).

Little Brother is free and a quick read. That would be my suggestion. Although Terry Brooks is one of my fav's.

First, you should vote in our Book of the Month poll, and read that:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=37219
/shameless plug

My vote is for Mistborn. I read his book "Elantris" and it was amazing. I've been wanting to get into that series (Sony doesn't have the first book up yet). Plus, he's taking over the Wheel of Time series for Robert Jordan, so you know he's gotta be good (considering he hasn't published much and got picked).

Then tell me how it is

Glen Cook, in addition to being a great author, is just an all around great guy! He used to run a book booth at WorldCons so he could stand around and talk about things with his customers and was very gracious in signing anything you shoved at him. I haven't been in a long time, so I don't know if he still does that.

His series on the Black Legion is great.

I'd vote for The Moon is a Harsh Mistress as your next book. There's lots of good stuff on your list, but that book in particular demonstrates why Heinlein was head and shoulders above the rest of the SF field.

Here are my suggestions -- in order:

f) Little Brother, by Cory Doctorow
-- I'd strongly recommend that everyone read this book. In fact, I'd like to sponsor this book in a high-school government course.

r) Pillars of the Earth, by Ken Follet
-- Definitely an epic book. I'm looking forward to picking up the sequel some time this year.

b) The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, by Robert Heinlein
-- One of my all-time favorite books. Its messages are on several levels and this book demands a re-read every 5 years of so.

k) Dune, by Frank Herbert
-- A classic. The attempts at movies just don't do it any justice.

I have these on my TBR list; they have good recommendations. I even have copies of all except the Brooks book. Just need to fit them into the reading schedule.

a) The Way of Shadows, by Brent Weeks
c) The Sword of Shannara, by Terry Brooks
e) Mistborn, by Brandon Sanderson
q) 1632, by Eric Flint

Considering you read about 8 books a day... I would expect your review on those 4 books, say by Sunday kickoff?

The free part doesn't matter, as I already own all those books in the list. I've been curious to try Terry Brooks. I've heard about fantasy a la Tolkien, so that always catches my attention.

I've voted a few days ago.

I know the author and I've read Elantris, which I liked. I also know that in Mistborn the author tried to twist the usal fantasy clichés. That also caught my interest. I've got this one for free from Tor and I've been looking to read it.

I'll let you know my opinion when I read it.

I've never read a book from Glen Cook, but I've always heard about the Black Company that I just had to buy it. The concept behind the Garret series sounds original and interesting, although I have no idea about its quality. This was clearly a blind purchase.

I've heard about this title, and how it's a favourite for many people. But I'm also afraid that its age might have a negative impact for a new reader. But if it's a classic sci-fi, I'll have to try it.

Little Brothen and Heinlein's classic have two nominations so far.
I'll wait a little bit to hear more opinions, while I finish my current read.

Thank you for your input.

He still do it. And it is more of a good bookshop nowadays since he has a lot of books and a good sortiment.. I am currently reading the Black Company books and I really like them. I tried to read them a couple of years ago but I read the first book and was not so impressed. Recently I re-read the first book and liked it much better and after the first book I really got into the series. I am currently read the third book of the Glittering Stone series.

I would personally say Frank Herbert Dune.

The only problem is that you would then have to start reading the rest

I think I read the first 4 or 5 (at which point I started to get bored) straight after each other

I tend to move between various genre in some unknown cyclical rhythm. When I'm into fantasy, I have no interest in sci/fi or history or biography or general/historical fiction. For me, the choices "at a given time" could not be this varied between genre.

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, by Robert Heinlein
The Sword of Shannara, by Terry Brooks
Dune, by Frank Herbert
Pillars of the Earth, by Ken Follet

Those four are "Books of All Time" in that if you liked the description enough to pick them up, you'll probably love 'em and consider yourself improved by having read any of them. The kind that "will" come up in conversation and you find yourself nodding about with someone. That's not how it is for everyone, we're all different but it seems to be for most. They contributed something more than just "great reading".

Cryptonomicon, by Neal Stephenson
Anathem, by Neal Stephenson
Black Company, by Glen Cook
Assassin's Aprendice, by Robin Hobb

These 4 just about are that kind. As enthusiastic as everyone is about Anathem now, they were the same about his Cryptonomicon 10 years ago and Quicksilver 5 years ago.

Little Brother, by Cory Doctorow
The Magic of Recluce, by L.E. Modesitt
1632, by Eric Flint

These I've read, enjoyed and can recommend as well. The ones I haven't listed may be great, I just haven't read them. There is nothing on your list I'd recommend against.

Good list. Just get cracking! If you're like me you'll get sidetracked into each author you like anyway. So your plan is only good for a book or two.

Broadly speaking during this time I want you to choose The Black Company series "by Glen Cook" Author says that hardened mercenary of the legendary Black Company records and his band's enlistment with the dark and evil Soulcatcher, one of the Ten Who Were Taken. Ask of me try this also "Shadows Linger: A Novel of the Black Company (Chronicles of The Black Company) by Glen Cook" A lot of the Taken die in this one.

Hi Over

It’s a no-brainer, “The Moon is a Harsh Mistress” of course.

Good reading,
