Kindle Unlimited SFF recs
I have a free KU sub for a month, and was wondering if anyone has suggestions for good books in KU? There's too much to wade through, and looking up authors I know and like hasn't turned up much that's in KU so far.

The most recent set of books I got from there was the Ratcatchers series (Priest and Thief) by Matthew Colville. I really enjoyed them and the third book should be out this year.
Charlie Holmberg's Paper Magician series was also good and available at one point. Dennis Taylor's Bobiverse series is excellent for science fiction. Some more details of what you like might help people give suggestions. |

I tend to keep a wishlist of things I'm interested in that are on KU, so that when I get a subscription I'm ready to go.
Maybe the best place to look for non-indie authors is books published by Open Road. They seem to cycle a selection through the service, and I've seen books by Julian May, Dave Duncan, Robin McKinley, Carol Berg, Kate Elliot, Patricia C Wrede, etc. If you do an Advanced Search for publisher "Open Road Media Sci-Fi & Fantasy" and then filter by Kindle Unlimited, you should see some decent stuff. Other than that, there are a few books published by Amazon's own imprints. I think Marko Kloos is probably my favourite. Military SF. And there are whole subgenres that largely live on KU, like LitRPG, if that's your cup of tea. Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman is a bit of a breakout hit for the genre, since it got a mainstream hardback release, but the ebooks are still self-published and on KU, I believe. Other big series are He Who Fights With Monsters by Shirtaloon/Travis Deverell (has a main character that some people find insufferable) and Primal Hunter by Zogarth (a bit edgelord). Another good place to look is the SPFBO (self-published fantasy blog-off) contest run by Mark Lawrence, here. The finalists are generally decent. They aren't all on KU, but a good chunk of them are. |

Jeff Wheeler has some great fantasy series on KU. I love both the Muirwood and Kingfountain series. If you like cozy fantasy, Chloe Garner’s Verida books are fun.

I believe author Jeremy Robinson is on KU. I seem to remember an entry on his personal website saying that he was going exclusively to KU. His books are kind of an Action/Adventure/SciFi/Horror mix. There are a lot of them. He seems to be moving into comics now, something that doesn't interest me personally, but he has lots of books that he's written over the years. I've only read two of his books I think, so I don't have massive experience with him, but what I've read isn't bad. It held my interest throughout the book.
Here's a list of his books: https://bewareofmonsters.com/the-books/ His personal website is named "Beware of Monsters". |
