importing specialized fonts
I'm fairly new to Sigil, though pretty comfortable with CSS and HTML.
My question: Is it a relatively simple matter to import fonts and associate them with an epub file? I'm specifically asking because I'm reading a book about Old English, and my ereader (Kobo Clara HD) tells me that it doesn't really have all the fonts it needs to do the complete job right. I'd consider learning out to do it if it's relatively simple, but since this is the only book I'll probably ever read that will need those fonts, I'm not up for spending four hours trying to figure it out. Guess I'm just looking for a quick take----pretty easy, or a pain in the butt. Thanks for any thoughts. |

Importing the font file into Sigil is just like importing any other file. Simply use Add Existing. The issue is then creating the CSS to use the font and then using that css in the right places.
There is a very nice plugin that handles the proper CSS creation: It can be found here in our Plugin Index: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...0&postcount=17 The font file itself should be an otf or ttf font file (as Windows has issues with some lesser used font file types). And of course, if you are going to publish your epub, you must have the license/permission to use that font commercially or use an open source font file that has no restrictions on redistribution. Sigil will also allow you to obfuscate your font for its protection, and there are plugins to strip down the font file to just the set of characters actually used in the book to both limit file size and to again help protect the font from being stolen or misused by limiting the text it can be used on. @porcupine59 lf you haven't already done so, you might want to download the official Sigil User Guide.
Then read the Include Custom Fonts tutorial. If your book was properly encoded, the Junicode font should work. You probably only need to embed the usual 4 default fonts. Thank you KevinH and Doitsu for the great information. I will follow your leads and give it a go. It sounds pretty do-able. I appreciate the help.

Be aware that in some e-readers, you have to turn on or enable "publisher" fonts in the e-reader's settings so that the e-reader will not default to only using its internal fonts.
