I'm getting sick and tired of all the times discussions in the calibre forum veer off to Linux is better than Windows, or similar, so please... use this thread for those discussions.

I'm going to vote for Photon OS. For me, it's one of the best solutions for running containers.

I still have fond memories of RT-11 on the LSI-11/03 in university; twin 8" floppy drives.

The fun we had trying to shoehorn the DEC Fortran compiler, Linker and all the source files for Collosal Cave (or was it Adventure) onto two floppies. It was tight.

Plus we'd had to TYPE all the source code in; the DEC service guy wouldn't give us a machine readable version, just a printout!

I have very fond memories of AmigaDOS and would loved to have seen what it might have become over time if the company hadn't been run into the ground. I liked CP/M, but I really loved using UNIX System V Release 2.

Today, I prefer Linux although I am still running one Windows computer (until October).

I remember using an Amiga. That chipset was so far ahead of it's competition. Sadly, Guru Meditation errors were rather common and caused wear on the left mouse button.

Back in the day several cable TV channels -- in my area, at least -- used Amigas. I figured that out while flipping through the channels and hitting a Guru meditation.

Proton isn't an Operating System, imho; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proton_(software)
Anyway, it's great... several things comes from Wine, but having also centered the jobs on that manner, imho helped someone else that won't be liking feeling tricking in WineHQ.

With that opinion and a toonie, I can get a coffee at Starbucks. Though I am wondering if you are running it on MacOS or Linux? I tried the Windows install with Cygwin and it crashed. Though that might be because I did not have a Windows 7.1+ install. I didn't feel up to installing Fedora's CoreOS in a VM, since I already have too many Linux VMs though that would have saved me the VirtualBox install, to try installing Panamax that way.

Nope, it was pretty terrible. The best it could do was a CGA resolution, albeit with 32 colors. Only in 1991 they managed to update it to be able to do 640x480 resolution, albeit with 4 colors instead of VGA's 16. The problem was no one wanted the VGA resolution in 1991, as people with big monitors could have 1024x768, even non-interlaced, and people with normal ones could enjoy 256 colors instead of 4. Also, to save some money, they decide to forego the froppy controller and could not update their chipset to be able to use the standard 1.44 floppy disks.
On software front, there was nothing to write home about. They bought a prototype microkernel OS from somewhere in the UK and never were able to change it significantly. It lacked a memory manager (and memory protection of any kind, being ran on 68k CPU), so if a program crashed, it had to be 'mummified', taking the ressources until the computer was rebooted.
Also, they could never do a keyboard for their computers.
