Is this an example of what they used to call samizdat? (sp)

Well, samizdat literally means "self-publishing", although its usual use is to refer to the more or less clandestine self-publishing efforts necessary in a climate of political oppression by the government prevalent in the former Soviet Union. So it's not quite what's happening here.
