				ebook viewer hanging again

So, the ebook viewer is hanging again, suddenly. I have GPU acceleration turned off globally and specifically in ENVs. This has been working for some time, but just now doesn't. Debug mode shows nothing special -- it doesn't even seem to note the book viewer was opened.

I note that MS pushed a new version of Edge and the VC++ runtime on the 6th. Sadly, I need Edge for some sites. Running 4.23 on Win 10 Pro 20H2 19042 RTX3070 video. Last edited by caseym54; 08-08-2021 at 02:39 PM. |

The viewer doesnt use either edge or the system vc runtimes. First run in safe mode and check that it works there. Then you can try turning off gpu acceleration as described here: https://doc.qt.io/qt-5/qtwebengine-debugging.html

Why not install the latest version 5.x version of Calibre?

I may. For quite some time a needed add-on was not available on 5.x. I will check that again, especially if I have to reinstall. BTW, currently the viewer does not work at all -- even if opened through File Explorer. Even when the AV is off. |

And the pass through safe mode fixes it. Thanks, although that seems a bit messy.

Basically, that is telling you that another program which is running in normal mode is interfering with the viewer. This is where you can try disabling blocks of programs that run at startup from the Task Manager tab. If that doesn't work, then try disabling services from MSConfig.exe. Just use screenshots or other methods to record what you've done.

One the backup utilities recently started blocking access to 'things' it regarded as 'suspicious', like some AV's do. Can't recall which one - might have been Acronis. BR |
