Unless W10 changed recently (with microsofts new windows as a "service" aka I want more money model, version numbers for windows are useless), you should still be able to use non-app store apps as defaults. What procedure are you following to try to change the default app?

thx
ermm .. notta hacker, by the book ??? hmmm .. wordy.
bottom left main windows icon on popup task bar -> settings -> apps -> default apps -> scroll down to, select, "choose default app by file type" <enter> scroll down to *.pdf, select adobe reader (previously set) <enter> popup "choose an app" window does not present option to select locally installed calibre. selection of microsoft app store as source provides inventory not containing calibre .. total dead end ??? btw, calibre 3.31 IS locally installed. Wow!
I went to Properties of a PDF file and Change for Open with Same list. Looks like you will need to Jam something in with Regedit (a Guru level operation) But why would you want to us Calibre (and that should probably be ebook viewer) to open a PDF? AFAIK That is not a Native PDF viewer |

Calibre does register (at least, it used to. I may be grandfathered ![]() The borg wants to get their hooks (ads, tracking, who knows) into anything in the store |

Microsoft's new control panel is designed for brain damaged gorillas as best as I can tell. Instead, locate a PDF file, right click on it, choose "Open with" then click more apps, you should see calibre (at least I do on my w10 PC) if you do not, then scroll to the bottom of the list and click on "Look for another app on this PC" browse to the calibre installation folder (C:\Program Files\Calibre2 by default) and choose calibre.exe

The Windows Default Programs mechanism was crap when it first showed up in NT ???, and every attempt to fix it since has made it worse. Under the covers it's probably still carrying features from OS/2, DDE verbs, and OLE - legacy legacy.
And I'm not aware of any safe alternatives - there used to be some, most of which have been discontinued. Some bits of the flat plastic Settings are (IMO) better, e.g. Bluetooth and Windows Update (on Pro). BR |

And I wish Windows did this in the OS/2 way. No OS I've seen has the same flexibility for associating programs with files. |

@davidfor - Windows NT pre-dates Window 95 by a couple of years. NT 3.1 was the first NT, so-called because that was the current 16bit Windows version. And I agree OS/2 file association handling is (because it's still in use) infinitely better than any Windows file association has ever been, or ever will be. We regarded early NT as an blend of OS/2 and Win 16 (mashup in modern parlance) that delivered the worst of both worlds
