Sorry, this is somewhat of a newbie question but what is the Paperwhite 3's screen made of? Is it plastic or does it have a glass layer like the Voyage and Oasis?

It has a glass e-ink substrate that is prone to breaking, like all kindles. When the substrate cracks, the screen is unusable.

I think the voyage and oasis may have a glass layer on top which may make them a little hardier, but not by much. Remember that even phone screens with gorilla glass will crack.

The good news is the PW3 is relatively cheap.

Thanks Barty. I was wondering whether the PW3 screen was tougher than the original PW screen, which scratched quite easily.

The PW3 has a plastic outer screen; the Voyage and Oasis have a glass outer screen. All have a glass substrate to the eInk panel itself.
