Any way to replace light guide on PW2?
Hello all,
This post is a long shot, but I was wondering if anyone has any experience or knowledge of a way to replace the Paperwhite 2 light guide. I was putting away dishes while reading the other day and one fell smack dab in the middle of my screen from about 3 feet or so above it. Didn't scratch the front plastic, didn't crack the screen. But it did crack the light guide. So now I have one spot that is a bright little line that casts 4-5 shadows (one from each LED). Is it still under warranty?
If yes, contact Amazon. |

AFAIK the lightguide is laminated to the rest of the screen so there's no way to replace just the light guide. The entire screen would need to be replaced.

You would need an accidental damage insurance policy to provide such cover. A warranty covers you against manufacturing defects. If you break or damage your device, it's rather unreasonable to expect Amazon to replace it. It's not their fault.

A person's best bet is read the warranty. Many here cover accidental breakage but not intentional breakage. If I drop something on the door to my toaster oven, Oster will fix or replace less shipping costs. If I take it apart and put it back together wrong, then Oster will not replace it. That is in the warranty itself. He might want to contact Amazon anyway as they sometimes give discounts on newer models if you return the old device. |

I loaned an in-warranty Kindle 4 to a neighbor with a book she wanted to read and her dog scratched the screen. I called Amazon in hopes of getting a discounted replacement but they insisted on replacing it under warranty even though I explained that it was user damage (if the dog can be considered a user) and no fault of the device.
I got a free replacement, which I've since given to a neighbor who is still using it. Amazon had no need to do that and it could be that the support lady was just having a good day and felt like celebrating. I don't know. But given that experience it can't hurt to call and give them a chance. Maybe you'll get a support person whose having a good day. ![]() Barry |
