Can't exit settings
![]() When I enter the settings menu (page displays "settings", "Accounts", etc) I can't exit it. There is a "X" at the top right ... but no amount of pressing that has any effect. I know it used to work ... So, now I need to turn the device off/on to get back to reading. Total pain. I have wiped the space between the bezel and the screen with a q-tip and run a bit of compressed air around it as well. I Have also done a "paperclip reset". All to no avail. Is the unit broken? |

I'm leaving it on the charger overnight. It did say that there was 50% power according to the little icon. I contacted Kobo and they told me to charge it and do a factory reset. I really don't want to do that! Transfering several hundred books back is a complete pain. At least with the Calibre plug in I can restore my reading stats. |

Alternatively, I take it as a chance to do a cleanup. I keep adding books, reading them and not removing any. So sometimes when I do a factory reset, I just resend the unread and in progress books. |

I really wouldn't worry about the time involved transferring the books after doing a factory reset that might clear up your problems. |

Charging didn't help ... so I guess it's time for a system reset.
I'm not bothered by reinstalling 500+ books. And, the "updating database" can be done overnight ![]() But, what about my reading stats? If I save the existing database with Calibre should I restore it before or after installing my books? Do I need the same books to be installed? Does it make sense to copy the existing library to my HD and then restore that? Or should I just use Calibre to resend? |

You can also just copy the database. For sideloaded books this is safe. The device will check for new an missing books and any it doesn't find will be removed from the internal database. The stats will be untouched. If you are buying books from Kobo, I'm not sure what happens. These might clean themselves up completely or change to books that need to be downloaded. Or you might have to delete through the UI and download them later. For either of the above, you will probably need to power off and back on to get everything right. From memory of the last time I did this, there were a couple of strange things when I disconnected from the PC, but the power off fixed them. |

Okay, thanks all for the help.
I copied all the books I had and the sql database to my HD, did a factory reset and then copied the works back. A bit of a pain, esp. when the kobo decided to dl the lastest firmware 2x. But, the good thing is that everything restored and there was no huge delay while the database was updated!!! The bad news is that I still can't access the top right corner of the screen. No bookmarking, and to exit from the setting menu I need to power off/on. I guess I'll have to give kobo a call in the AM and start the (hopefully easy!) process of getting a replacement. BTW, what are all those kobo-images files on the device for? |

That's bad luck. The only time I have seen something similar was with my son's Glo. In that case, there was a scrap of paper stuck under the bezel. Removing it fixed things. But, you have already done that. So, you need to convince Kobo to replace it.
The kobo-images directory contains the cover images. There are up to three per book in different sizes. And while the extension is "parsed", they just jpegs. |

Davidfor,
Books that are downloaded from kobo that you have previously read and then synced the device, will show up as either 1% or 99% read in the reading tab. |

If the database on the device is backed up, a factory reset is done, then the database restored, it will contain references to all the books that were on the device before the factory reset. For sideloaded books, any that were not put back on the device in exactly the same place will be removed from the database. For downloaded kepubs, I don't know what happens if the file disappears. They could be removed from the dattabase like the sideloaded books, mark it as needing to be downloaded or something else. I don't remember testing this, so I don't know what happens. |

I called Kobo earlier today and the agent agreed that I probably needed a replacement. Sent me email asking for a copy of the invoice, my address, etc.
So far the process has been quick and painless. Next to nothing hold time on the phone waiting and no arguments about "it should work", etc. Now, I just have to wait to "get approved by the next level" so the exchange process can start. Hope it goes as good as the it's been. |

Do other things that use the top right work? e.g. setting bookmark?
If a particular screen can't be exited in programs generally it's often a problem with writing data. The problem could well be with a database issue. |

The only thing shown in the settings page that is stored in the database is the Kobo user details and the dictionary details. The user info doesn't get written to the database from the settings and the dictionary info is save from within the settings, so the database shouldn't be an issue.

My new kobo arrived today. This is really good service from kobo! No problems.
Didn't even need to give them a CC number ... guess they know I'm very trust-able ![]() So, after getting new one charged, updated and registered I plugged my old and the new into my computer. Copied all my books and the sql database to the new one. Unplugged and everything is back to where it was. And no overnight delay while updating the database either. Very cool. I have to assume it was a dead sensor. All works just like it should now. |
