A Glimpse of Tiger by screenplay writer and novelist Herman Raucher (Wikipedia), from whom you might have seen several films or tv episodes based on his work, is his vintage 2nd novel, which happens to be a satiric romantic comedy dating from the 1970s, which was apparently a bestseller back in the day, starring a teenaged runaway and a con artist living in New York City as love-struck bohemians who turn to a life of petty crime, whereupon Hilarity (and tragedy) Ensues, free courtesy of publisher Diversion Books, who are e-printing it from its 1971 Putnam hardcover edition.
NB: although this ostensibly follows the tropes of a romantic comedy, this may not necessarily adhere to all of them including the HEA which category romance readers expect, according to its own Wikipedia entry (chock full o' spoilers, and also notes that this was nearly turned into a film) which indicates a certain deconstructive mode to the plotting, so YMMV and caveat Gentle Reader if you're a traditionalist when it comes to happy endings for love-struck bohemians who turn to a life of petty crime. Currently free @ Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK) & iTunes (available to Canadians and many places worldwide, as Diversion freebies often are). And this has been the (late!) selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day. I just happen to like satirical black comedies which deconstruct the tropes of popular media depictions of romantic comedy, which I happen to regard as being pretty much psychotic in nature anyway, so having my opinion validated and and getting a vintage retro bestseller version at the same time is like a nifty bonus, at that. ![]() Enjoy! Description Tiger is a nineteen-year-old runaway who comes to the big city to start anew. There she meets Luther, a quirky con artist with charm to burn. Together they pull small scams and petty crimes on the populace of New York in the 1970s, making their money and falling in love. But a con artist is a con artist seven days a week, and soon Tiger finds herself wondering if Luther will ever be able to settle down and start building a life with her. This mesmerizing, surprising novel explores two unforgettable people as they live and love in Manhattan—and enchants readers with a romance impossible to forget. |
