supported formats kindle p2 and kindle conversion
Hi,
New to this site and have a few questions. I just now put my order in for the paperwhite 2. I was considering several different ereaders, but ended up ordering the paperwhite. However I will also be sideloading some content mainly documents for my studies. The database gives me a few different choices for format: doc., docx., epub., pdf., html. What I would like to do is getting these documents to my kindle with as little hassle as possible and it seems that the send to my kindle feature will not convert epub. files. So how would I go about this? I know about Calibre and will probably try it, but Amazons method seems so easy to use. Im almost considering cancelling my order and getting a kobo, but I am not sure. Hope somebody have some advice. Thanks. |

Assuming the ePub is a well formatted book file and not just an auto convert of the doc with unknown quality then ePub to AZW3 with either Calibre or KindleGen/Kindle Previewer would be my choice.
Otherwise the doc or docx file could be used with the send to Kindle option, it's just hard to say how the conversion will go. Not knowing what the formatting is of what you're trying to convert makes it hard to say. If it's a straight up text document it should go pretty well. If it's full of tables, graphs, charts, etc. I don't know. |

Thanks for your reply. Fortunately the documents are mostly textbased.
The attached screenshot would be a typical document.https://imgur.com/MOsTCYM,558ghxw |

No guarantee, but I'd think the doc or docx version would convert fine using send to Kindle.

You could also just download the EPUB and add it to calibre. calibre can email them to your Kindle and auto-convert to MOBI in the process.

Thanks again.
Maybe I should consider using Calibre afterall. After what I understand epub --> mobi. would be an easier conversion than doc./docx.? And if Calibre is able to send automatically to the kindle it should not be to much of a hassle. Will Calibre be able to help me organize these documents into some type of folder? Also what about converting to Azw3? Last edited by Delirious; 02-13-2015 at 01:48 PM. |

You cannot email an AZW3 to your Kindle, although you can sideload it via USB. I assume you mentioned send-to-Kindle because you want it to whispersync between devices?
For a partial summary of the issues with AZW3/MOBI, whispersync, etc. see here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...17#post3042617 Depending on the formatting, EPUBs may simply have been an automated conversion from DOCX, which may or may not be good quality. Assuming they worked on the EPUB version, it will probably be a better conversion, yes. Putting stuff in folders -- I assume you mean collections? There is a Kindle Collections plugin for calibre, which requires being jailbroken. |

Allright, I see.
Well i am not planning to use the whispernet/3g as I have ordered the wifi model. But I might be at the library were some kind of wireless way of transfer would be beneficial. But I am guessing there is a limitation in amazon document sync itself. So the mobi. extension would be the way to go then? Sorry for all the questions, but there is a lot of new things to get my head around ![]() Your help is appreciated! Edit: Sorry eschwartz, apparantely I did not read your reply thoroughly enough and got confused between Whispersync and whispernet. Anyway after reading a bit more I have to say it is a shame that it is not possible to send azw3s to the kindle through whispersync. As i kind of mentioned the scenario were such a service would be useful is when i am not at home. Sure, most of the time I will bring my laptop, but my main computer is a desktop. Also I actually got to test a Paperwhite 2 from a friend just now. I did a little test converting and transfering some documents. Every document were converted to azw3. I tried html., docx. and epub. And docx. --> azw3 through calibre was by far the best conversion. Last edited by Delirious; 02-13-2015 at 05:42 PM. |

Whispernet just refers to the ability to connect to Amazon's servers, regardless of whether via wifi or 3G. I'm not sure what you mean by a limitation on document sync. If you sent the doc to your Kindle via Send to Kindle, or directly, via your Kindle's email address, the doc will sync. The only limit I know of is 5GB that they give you for personal document storage.

Yeah, it is primarily useful for syncing annotations and stuff.
![]() (EDIT: Yes, annotations is sort of synonymous with last page read, at least in my mind -- insomuch as they are stored in the same data files. ![]() Last edited by eschwartz; 02-14-2015 at 09:00 PM. |
