Images exporting to epub

I have 12 images like the one attached that are included in a book designed for print in ID but also exporting to an epub. I built the image in Photoshop because it needed a stroke and the stroke doesn't export from ID (?). Originally I built the entire image in PS with text. That exports fine.It is anchored inline. But the text is a bit blurry. So I tried just using the image+stroke from PS and then creating a text box in ID inside the image. Then the text and image separated when exported to epub. Any suggestions on how to do this effectively?

You could try SVG or PNG for images like that.

And if your version of Photoshop doesn't support SVG output (I think that feature is only in CC), you can still get to SVG from Photoshop; it just takes a couple of steps.

Export to a multi-layer PDF.
In the Summary section of the PDF export dialog, look for any warnings. If Photoshop indicates that it can't include your text in vector output, change whatever settings it tells you to change so that it can. For example, you need to avoid things like faux bold or layer styles, because Photoshop would then have to rasterize the text into pixels, rather than including it as text.
Download Inkscape and use it to convert the PDF to an SVG file.

If you do these things, the text should be crisp (and searchable in most readers, as an added bonus).

This all assumes, of course, that the text is, in fact, an actual text layer in Photoshop.

Blurry comes from JPEG.

Text and drawings *need* sharp edges. So the answer is either vector or lossless graphics. Vector graphics have a lot of qualities. But they have to be drawn each time they are put on screen. That takes time and computing power. Meaning it eats up the battery. Better check out PNG, GIF, even BMP. PNG comes with better compression -- smaller files -- and the ability to use a color index -- you have a table with only the used colors.

Although there are those who are in love with PNG on this board, it takes vigilance to make sure that the settings are correct to produce small files. There is also software to shrink overbig PNGs.

Very good remark. Unless one does the processing with something like GIMP, pngcrush, pngopti or the likes are one important step before using the pictures.
