I see I can check out through Amazon and the books can be sent directly to my device. Are these actually purchased from Amazon and available in my "cloud" or must I save them elsewhere?

I downloaded them to my computer. You can use Amazon's free "Send to Kindle" app to save them to your cloud page though.
