He gave away a free ebook, then sold ebooks of his other titles. Later he self published them in paperback. Then he sold the film rights to 2 of them and the big publishers came sniffing round. That resulted in about 8 books (most of them being reworkings of the self published ones).

That does not sound like he is back from the dark side, just the other side.
