Marvel offering free digital downloads with physical comic purchases

http://www.theverge.com/2012/3/10/28...omic-purchases I know they aren't the first, but maybe other publishers will follow. |

Is the code just printed inside the comic? Because one could just walk into a comic store, write down a bunch of codes, and never pay for comics again.

In a larger sense, however, consumers want content available digitally and they're willing to pay for it. iTunes is evidence of this. However, I think consumers are impatient with dinosaur media industries' unwillingness to evolve and they're tired of being treated like thieves. The question to me is why publishers haven't learned from the recording industry's experience.

They're also a dollar more than regular editions; at least for DC anyway. It's a great idea no doubt, but comics are such an expensive hobby

It's likely a code generated at time of purchase that gets printed on the receipt. That's how a lot of the pay-as-you-go phone cards work; it means that stealing the card itself is useless. (Some have scratch-off codes, but others require a network-connected register.)

Marvel's current plan is some form of scratch-off code where all of their $3.99 print comics will also entitle the buyer to a digital copy at no extra cost (unlike DC who does charge a dollar more for the digital copy.) What I don't like is that Marvel is also selling the digital copy on its own for that same $3.99 and as a digital only customer I feel that's a rip-off. Sure, DC charges a dollar more for the combo pack - but they also drop digital prices by a dollar after a month which Marvel doesn't do. |

If this is the case, I may find myself going into a couple of the local comic shops to do some purchases, and not wait for bigger books to hit Amazon.

This is the way all books should be sold.

That's awesome....although, if you collect them, scratching the code off the comic WILL devalue them in my opinion. So re-sale value will go down the drain.

The simultaneous release makes sense to me, however they implement it!

Well, it's nice. Now, if only they would produce a decent app to read comics on the iPad, the current one just does not cut it.
