Question add books but not tags
is there a way to configure add books so that existing tags found in the books data are ignored/discarded , not added to calibres collection of tags.

I want to be able to drop a book onto main calibre window or add it via add books, & have the tags field left blank until I decide when/if/how to populate it.

Just turn off grabbing metadata from inside the book, in Preferences -> Adding books. It will mean it will rely on filename to populate Title/Author/Series.

surely there's a better solution. I am able to suppress tab updates for "download metadata" so why can I not also suppress them for "add book" ?

Nope. Granular control over what metadata gets pulled from a book during add book operations is still just a wishlist item last time I had this discussion with Kovid, and not high priority compared to other stuff the developers are working on.

Personally I *always* turn off grabbing metadata from inside the book so it doesn't bother me.
