Which Kindle do I use?
I have just bought a new Amazon Kindle. There are no other letters etc. to designate a model. It is simply called Kindle. When I install Calibre it asks which reader I am using but only suggests Kindles such as the Kindle DX, Kindle Fire etc.
What would be the best designation for my Kindle?

Unless you have a Fire or DX
Kindle (for 1,2,3,4)

Can I assume the same applies to the command-line ebook-convert utility? I have a keyboard-less Kindle (the Kindle 4, right?), so should I use "--output-profile=kindle" instead of "--output-profile=kindle_dx"?

Yes, use "--output-profile=kindle".
