I am currently working my way through my Calibre setup, and I need to know how to correct this issue: every time I open a book in Calibre, to edit the metadata, etc, it places folder on my desktop for that author - i.e., when I've edited 40 books, and I close Calibre, I'm confronted with a desktop screen FILLED with folders, which I then drag into my "Kindle Books" folder...and now I'm wondering if there is a setting I need to change in order to stop this from happening. As I have over 1200 books in my Calibre library, this could easily become a time-consuming (wasting!!) process...

It sounds as if you have defined your desktop as being your Calibre library (which is definitely not recommended)! If so, then simply telling Calibre to use a different location for the library will resolve that issue.
You could try telling calibre to move the library from its current location (the desktop) to the new one you select and that should also move all the books that Calibre has stored on the desktop. |

Ok, so could someone give me a brief step-by-step on how to change the library location? I think this is probably the answer, but I'm not quite sure how to fix it...

Maybe I should clarify that I've tried all the obvious ways I can see to move the library location - I either get a message telling me that the destination folder isn't empty, or if it starts to copy, after about 15 folders, it stops and tells me it failed.

1) prevent use of the desktop for NEW libraries. 2) creating in a non-empty folder. (you've seem to run into this part) Failure may be due to damaged or (now) missing folders that Calibre still thinks as part of the old Library. You could have file system damage. Run the disk check utility that came wit your O/S |

I have a current version of Calibre running, and I'm using the following steps:
Click the calibre icon on toolbar; Switch/Create library / move library to new location / selecting folder on portable hard drive -- the process starts and then after 15 folders are created, I get the following: Move library from C:\Users\Lisa\Desktop to F:\ELibrary Python function terminated unexpectedly [Errno 2] No such file or directory: u'C:\\Users\\Lisa\\Desktop\\calibre' (Error Code: 1) Traceback (most recent call last): File "site.py", line 132, in main File "site.py", line 109, in run_entry_point File "site-packages\calibre\utils\ipc\worker.py", line 181, in main File "site-packages\calibre\library\move.py", line 21, in move_library File "site-packages\calibre\library\database2.py", line 3312, in move_library_to File "shutil.py", line 81, in copyfile IOError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: u'C:\\Users\\Lisa\\Desktop\\calibre' |

As I see it (from the path) there should be a Folder name Calibre And that should contain the Library(metadata.db and author folders) |

Do not try to move you library to a folder under desktop. Instead create a folder else where like C:\Users\Lisa\Calibre Library and move your calibre library there.

I am about ready to cry - I did manage to copy the .db file and all the author folders manually to the portable drive, and then I uninstalled calibre (and I looked for any leftover folders / files) - I reinstalled from the site - as soon as the program opened, it loaded all 1281 books, with the same library path! (C:\Users\Lisa\Desktop)

Using that exact path that you suggest - this is what I get after exactly 15 folders... Move library from C:\Users\Lisa\Desktop to C:\Users\Lisa\Calibre Library Python function terminated unexpectedly [Errno 2] No such file or directory: u'C:\\Users\\Lisa\\Desktop\\calibre' (Error Code: 1) Traceback (most recent call last): File "site.py", line 132, in main File "site.py", line 109, in run_entry_point File "site-packages\calibre\utils\ipc\worker.py", line 187, in main File "site-packages\calibre\library\move.py", line 21, in move_library File "site-packages\calibre\library\database2.py", line 3312, in move_library_to File "shutil.py", line 81, in copyfile IOError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: u'C:\\Users\\Lisa\\Desktop\\calibre' |

Thank you -- I think somehow the program on my laptop was corrupted, and I finally realized that when I uninstalled the first time, I didn't go into the desktop folder and delete all of the individual book files...did the total clean up this time. Uninstalled, deleted everything! Reinstalled, made sure I chose the right path, and then I copied the library folder over from the portable hard drive to the folder on the C drive -- worked perfectly!!!
